This video is the sequel to the beloved children's book and video Anne of Green Gables. It continues the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong young orphan in 1890s Canada, whose hot temper matches her red hair. Anne of Green Gables told of Anne's adoption by an elderly brother and sister, Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) and Matthew Cuthbert, and her childhood adventures in the idyllic village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Anne of Avonlea takes up the story soon after Matthew's death, when Anne has graduated from college. It follows her struggles and adventures as an aspiring writer and English teacher in a private school on the mainland. Girls seven and older, as well as adults, will enjoy this intelligent and beautifully made film, first shown on PBS. It's filled with themes parents can discuss with their daughters--including self-reliance, generosity, and perseverance. It also gives a realistic portrayal of the situation for women during this historical period, through characters that are multifaceted and human. Anne's struggle to find her voice as a writer, to handle difficult people maturely, to stay optimistic despite setbacks, and to nurture her students are both thought provoking and entertaining. Girls will also enjoy Anne's romantic travails, as she tries to decide between two suitors: her childhood friend Gilbert, and a rich, handsome, and mysterious widower. The film is beautifully filmed, and the costumes and settings portray an idyllic time and place. The cast is excellent. Megan Follows as the spirited Anne and Dewhurst as the gruff but tender Marilla give especially fine performances. --Elisabeth Keating

Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5

1) A great sequel   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
If you liked the first Anne, this sequel will be sure to please. With elements straight from the book series, it continues on with the imperfect yet ever charming Anne as she continues developing into a woman. As before, we find Anne ambitiously pursuing education, but harboring a secret wish to be a great writer. However with her best friend Diana getting married and the people around her growing up and moving on, Anne has to decide what she wants in life (Gilbert?) or whats in her heart. With a fitting conclusion to satisfy all viewers, this series is a great way for anyone to spend a Sunday afternoon at home with family. The only thing better would be the books!P.S. While I highly recommend the first two installments in this series, I caution against the third, 'The Continuing Story.' It was a great disappointment... mainly because there is no trace of the original books in this film whatsoever, with the Anne we know and love re-written into a gloomy, plodding melodrama of WW1. I actually yelled at the screen and fought the desire to take the disk out of the player and stomp on it. My advice, stick with the ending from the sequel.

2) Good Adaptation   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Adapting a book can be hard to do well - staying true to the characters people already love is, to me, the most important thing. This film, while it combines plots from 3 books, does a good job of keeping most of the best moments, combining minor characters in a believable way and staying true to the characters LM Montgomery created. It works well, and will be enjoyed by fans of the books and fans of the Sullivan's "Anne of Green Gables" alike. (As oppsed to "The Continuing Story" - if you like these movies, trust me, stop with this one!!)

3) Misrepresented   [Rating: 1 out of 5]
I purchased this for my girlfriend, who is deaf, and don't be fooled by the information presented above, my copy was not subtitled in any way shape or form.

4) Rent it--don't buy it.   [Rating: 2 out of 5]
I highly recommend watching the original Anne of Green Gables, and then following up on Anne by reading L.M. Montgomery's "Anne" series. There are eight total books that follow Anne's life--and this movie veers off from all of them. I'm an "Anne purist" and a tough critic, so for me the movie isn't as good as it could be. It's still a fun, nice, family film--but I don't recommend investing your money in it.In this movie, Anne leaves Avonlea fairly early in the film--after refusing to marry Gilbert and watching Diana marry Fred Wright. Green Gables, Marilla, Mrs. Lynde, and other Avonlea friends from "Anne of Green Gables" have little to no role in this movie. Instead, Anne heads off to Kingsport to teach at a ladies college. From here on the movie starts to drag...Anne has troubles with her students...Anne tries to makes friends with a town that hates her...it's actually pretty lonely and depressing. Anne is courted by Morgan Harris (a creation Kevin Sullivan came up with, not Montgomery), a rich single dad to one of her students. Anne tries to tutor his daughter and makes friends with Mrs. Harris (the only interesting character in the whole movie) and in the end--in true Anne fashion--the entire town ends up in love with Anne. She refuses Morgan Harris, returns to Avonlea, and accepts her true love Gilbert. All well and good, but it's not what happens in the books, and it leaves no way for the next sequeal (Anne of Green Gables--The Continuing Story) to follow the books, either. It was disappointing to me since "Anne of Green Gables" was so well done and DID follow the book---I don't understand why Kevin Sullivan didn't do the same thing with his sequel. On a side note, Anne (Megan Follows) is actually annoying in this movie. She's cold, stuck up, and a loner---not at all how Anne should be, and a big departure from the imaginative, friendly girl in "Anne of Green Gables". It's a nice family movie to rent, but I honestly wouldn't bother trying to own it. Buy the first movie and a good quality set of Anne books.

5) Sequel! It's not the awful third movie!   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
First, beware of other reviews of less than three stars; those reviewers mistakenly believe this is the awful third movie about Anne, espionage, and World War I, but it is not. This follows the first Anne of Green Gables and is a delightful movie. Although it departs from the books to a degree and leaves out some characters and changes others, the fact remains that this can be enjoyed by everyone who loves Anne. The acting, while already above par with Follows, is improved even more, and each time I watch this, I have a dopey smile on my face just from the joy of watching it again and again. Remember, this is the great second movie, not the awful third (which is called The Continuing Story for those reviewers who weren't smart enough to figure it out based on the title and the year).
