Murder, and its tale-telling aftermath, is the compelling subject of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Since it premiered on CBS on October 6, 2000, CSI was a ratings triumph, spawning a spinoff (CSI: Miami) and positioning itself for long-term success. As the first season demonstrates, creator Anthony Zuiker's foolproof formula was established early on, bolstered by a fine ensemble cast and requiring minimal tweaking as the season progressed; its Las Vegas-based "criminalists" eventually became "CSI" steeped in the scientific minutiae of forensic investigation, but the series arrived essentially intact, with an irresistible (and seemingly inexhaustible) supply of corpses and the mysteries that surround them. Influenced by the graphic precedent of movies like Seven and Kiss the Girls, CSI matches morbidity with dispassionate methodology; viewers are so fascinated by the investigative process that they're unfazed by intimate autopsies and internal (i.e., digitally animated) views of traumatized flesh, bone, and sinew. While keeping abreast of cutting-edge technologies, CSI combines the ingenuity (and fallibility) of villains with the appealing humanity of its heroes. CSI director and entomologist Gil Grissom (played by series coproducer William Petersen) is introverted but ethically intense; he's both mentor and moral compass for his night-shift team, including a former stripper-turned-CSI (Marg Helgenberger); a recovering gambler (Gary Dourdan); an eager ace (George Eads) with room for improvement; a workaholic (Jorja Fox) who can't always remain emotionally detached from her cases; and a chief detective (Paul Guilfoyle) who's a necessary link to police procedure. Like The X-Files, CSI supports its characters with feature-film production values, employing a Rashomon structure that turns murder into a progressively accurate study of cause and effect. Script quality is consistently high ("Blood Drops" and "Unfriendly Skies" are exceptional), direction is slick and sophisticated, and the mysteries are complex enough to invite multiple viewings. Despite a regrettable shortage of DVD features, CSI's inaugural season remains addictively worthy of its lofty reputation. --Jeff Shannon2) Description

1) csi first season [Rating: 5 out of 5]
purchased for grand-daughter,as we all are fans of csi. she is now wanting to collect all seasons of show. as her grand-mother, i agree with her.2) CSI can't be beat! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I'm addicted to CSI - I start at disc 1 of the first season and keep going until I run out of DVDs at the end of the most recent season, then I start all over again! The special featues are great - really interesting!3) A haunting Masterpiece [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Quite possibly the best TV-Drama series that I have ever had the privelege of watching. Gil Grissom, Catherine Willows, Nick Stokes, Warrick Brown and the rest of the characters are played perfecty by their counterparts. The science in the show is very in-depth and taken from cases that had been in the news and they basically did offshoots of them. The one thing I love about CSI is the amount of twists you get per show. The evidence collecting, analyzing and very real and very thorough and heres the best part.... they explain everything they're doing so your not left in the dark as to what they just did with that eye dropper or UV light bar and what they're looking for. Terrific first season. A must watch for those who like a really good mystery.Amid the lights of the Strip and the fast action on the tables of Las Vegas is a dedicated task force in the city's police department: the Crime Scenes Investigation Unit, the most highly touted lab in the nation. Headed by Det. Gil Grissom (William L. Petersen), CSI takes on the goriest, most disturbing of cases that would baffle other units. This collection includes all 23 episodes that make up the first season of CBS's groundbreaking series. There is a reason this is the best show on television. It's just incredible, it completely pulls you in and keeps you enthrall and intrigued until the end. I love that fact that science is being show as an art, a craft, an a pure gift; not just something that involves "geeks" with the stereo-typical lab coat and pocket protectors. The cast is superb, I love Grissom's off beat humor and interesting random bits of knowledge, I also love Cathrine Willows whom many simply presume is snappy and cynical - but it's obvious there's more to her. All the characters have multiple layers of depth, with is constantly - but not overly, examined as the seasons progresses. The show is primarily about the crimes, which is why I enjoy it so much; but through each episode you learn another piece of information about one of the characters, in a subtle way. Take for example episode #105 entitled "Friends and Lovers" in that episode we learn the distinct types of cases that really get beneath Gil Grissom's skin; men who beat their wives, sexual abuse on children, and the scum that pedal death to kids. It's things like that, so simply and forwardly offered up about character, but not analyzed in a sappy or over-the-top fashion that I treasure about this show. The original csi is great but csi miami and csi ny comes off short & is a sadly attempt to copy the best tv series, which is csi.4) Excellent Intro to Forensics [Rating: 5 out of 5]
The first season of CSI is really good. Besides the charater devleopment which really draws you in, the forensic content is fab. I have watched this program from season one .. I love it. I think the season one of CSI takes you through the topics for forensics like you are a newbie at this but in a very smart way. The topics they cover range from murder, blood drops, glass fragments, serial killer, fingerprints, handwriting analysis, and other trace evidence. CSI is an excellent show that introduces the veiwer to the various forensic studies. In addition, the charaters are cool, likeable, and you identify with them very easily. The show would not be what it is without the excellent charaters created by the actors in this show. All of them do a wonderful job bringing the veiwer into their world. Congrats!5) The Season that Started it All! [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Little choppy at first, but by about the 8 or 9th episode the actors were relaxed with their characters and they really started to get along with each other. It is still my favorite TV show on, and I wouldn't miss it for the world
