Half of the characters in this 1988 John Landis potboiler seem to be played either by Eddie Murphy or costar Arsenio Hall, swaddled in elaborate Rick Baker makeup appliances that render them unrecognizable but also weirdly immobile. As a pampered African prince who journeys incognito to Queens, New York, to find a bride who will love him just for himself, Murphy manages to look smug and naive at the same time. There are enjoyable sequences of Murphy's Prince Akeem applying his lordly manner to his new job in a fast-food emporium, and falling for the boss's spirited daughter (Shari Headley), who teaches him how to party down, American style. But the fish-out-water premise is never fully exploited. Star spotters will have a field day locating Cuba Gooding Jr., Donna Summer, Louie Anderson, Vondie Curtis Hall, E.R.'s Eriq La Salle, and Samuel L. Jackson in their minuscule supporting roles. --David Chute

This movie came out when Eddie Murphy's stardom was at it's peak, and I don't think anyone made so many consistently great comedies in the 80's as Murphy.Coming to America is one of the best comedies of the decade and everyone should watch it. This DVD is not so bad either,with some classic interviews with both Arsenio Hall and Eddie Murphy.The interactive menu is easy to maneuver,and the video transfer is great.Sound quality could have done some work,although it's not that noticeable.2) Classic and very funny flick [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is when Eddie Murphy was funny and at the top of his comedy. Plus, this film is in HD that makes it better! Great film and on a good format.3) One of the classic movies with Eddie Murphy [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Not so much to say about the movie. This is one very funny and romantic Eddie Murphy movie and as this HD-DVD has also nice extras and features it is a clear recommendation.4) CLASSIC [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Easily one of the best films of Eddie Murphy's career. Very little of the mugging for the camera he normally does. And, the best I've seen Arsenio Hall act. Story is good. And, the actress playing his love interest has the most beautiful smile I've ever seen. I could watch this over and over.5) Great dvd and quick shipping :) [Rating: 5 out of 5]
The dvd looks great. its a great dvd to add to my blu-ray collection. Way better then the standard dvd. Hope that Paramount comes back to blu-ray soon.
