The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it's based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud's former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita

1) Wonderful!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This collector's edition is well worth the money. I played Final Fantasy VII and this movie presents a interesting story about what happened several years after the game. The plot is interesting and the computer generated details are exquisite. The extras are nice as well. There are 10 postcards , the script in English, and a short novel. The novel acts as a bridge between the game and the movie; it has short stories about Barret, Denzel, Tifa, and Cloud. These short stories are OK, but they only really cover the people I mentioned. The extras on the DVD are nice, they include scenes from Final Fantasy VII, interviews with the people who created Advent Children, and the anime Last Order. I would recommend this set if you really enjoyed Final Fantasy VII.

2) Entertaining and Cheap   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Okay, for those who don't already know, this is a CGI sequel to the popular Playstation RPG Final Fantasy VII. If you want a plot summary, look it up on Wikipedia, but don't expect to understand it fully without experiencing the game yourself. Essentially, two years after the game's close, Cloud and the gang find themselves confronted with a trio of whiny, yet surprisingly tough, silverhaired crazies with a plot that involves the children of Midgar, the ever-present Lifestream, and their search for "Mother"--or at least, what's left of her. Now, this is an entertaining film. There's a massive amount of action, an interesting storyline (for FFVII veterans, not so much for newbies; see below), and some really, really good animation. I couldn't leave my seat for the duration of the film. There's a good bit of humor (both intentional and otherwise; half of the trio's dialogue revolves around "Mother," and about two-thirds through the film, I spontaneously shouted "MOMMY!" It actually fit perfectly with the scene...), plenty of drama, and fight scenes galore. The music is great as well, though a good deal of it is ripped from the FFVII Piano Collection. The major problem is the film's inaccessibility to newcomers to the story. Things get very confusing if you've never played the game, and while scanning a Wikipedia article helps, I worry it might become too much for an FFVII virgin to understand.Still, I'd definitely reccomend buying the film. It's a good hour and a half's worth of entertainment, and hell, the cost is now down to $8 USD. It's worth it.

3) The movie looks good and everything.   [Rating: 3 out of 5]
Wish the movie was longer (the rest of the FF7 cast make cameos at the end of the movie) to fight a creature their attacks seem uselessagainst (except Cloud's). I'd have liked to have seen more of them through outthe film (but it was mostly about Cloud). The second disk was junk. Could have had a second movie/all kinds of goodies. Instead, bits & piece like a few deleted scenes etc. Well at least it was "Final Fantasy," unlike that crappy Spirits Within. A.C. just left me wanting more, but the visuals/action/voice acting were A+.

4) Beautiful Visual Poetry   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This film is amazing. Usually japanese anime is silly and ridiculous, but this movie was very beautiful and poetic. I've always had some interest in playing FF7 but never got around to it. I'm glad they made this movie because now I feel like I have enjoyed FF7 without actually slogging through the primitive game for 60 hours. They made the male characters super beautiful. In fact they looked better than the females. At first all the CGI characters seemed like strange, innocent androids who had replaced the real humans, but by the end of the movie I was thinking of them as humans. I hope there are other great Japanese CGI movies like this one and that they will make many more. I think this is definitely the direction they should go with anime from now on. It is so much better than traditional hand-drawn anime. Oh and I really liked that their eyes were normal size instead of huge.

5) Despite my rating...   [Rating: 3 out of 5]
This film is undoubtedly one of the best animated films in history. However, AMAZONWhen I received my item with my four books, I found that the shrinkwrap around the whole 5 items was too tight, and created unsightly white wear marks on the edges of this beautiful collection. It made the set look very used. The cover is BLACK, not that crimsonish red color (just for those obsessed with appearances).TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH, I think this set is overpriced. The DVD's themselves are the SAME as the two-disk special edition (which, btw, is just over 10 dollars). You get 10 pictures that are the size of the box (which you can easily download online...) and has 2 very thin books (one is the script, and the other is the novel). Each book is printed on very glossy, high-end paper, but they are only 1/4" in thickness. Overall, the 10 pieces of artwork + script + novel = 17 dollars. I think that is NOT such a great deal CONSIDERING AMAZON DAMAGED THE PRETTY BOX IT ALL CAME IN.Also, if you live in cold weather, be sure to take the set in right away. The delivery people left mine out 4 hours before I went to get it (it was around 10 degrees out there... snow was fresh on the ground).Overall, the film is EXCELLENT (just read the other reviews), but the packaging done by Amazon was horrendous. I've ordered from Amazon 50 some times and this is the first time that I have EVER been so disappointed. I cannot return it now because the shrinkwrap around the box is gone. Just be careful if you are ordering, and consider buying the 2-disk edition if you're tight on money. This isn't a VERY special edition.
