Sarah (a teenage Jennifer Connelly) rehearses the role of a fairy-tale queen, performing for her stuffed animals. She is about to discover that the time has come to leave her childhood behind. In real life she has to baby-sit her brother and contend with parents who don't understand her at all. Her petulance leads her to call the goblins to take the baby away, but when they actually do, she realizes her responsibility to rescue him. Sarah negotiates the Labyrinth to reach the City of the Goblins and the castle of their king. The king is the only other human in the film and is played by a glam-rocking David Bowie, who performs five of his songs. The rest of the cast are puppets, a wonderful array of Jim Henson's imaginative masterpieces. Henson gives credit to children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, and the creatures in the movie will remind Sendak fans of his drawings. The castle of the king is a living M.C. Escher set that adults will enjoy. The film combines the highest standards of art, costume, and set decoration. Like executive producer George Lucas's other fantasies, Labyrinth mixes adventure with lessons about growing up. --Lloyd Chesley

Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5

1) Great Movie   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This was a DVD replacement for my old VHS. It is a classical favorite of my kids, great nieces, and all their friends. The puppetry is amazing, characters lovable, and scenery delightful.

2) Great Fantasy with Jim Henson characters   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Great Fantasy film, and good for fans of David Bowie, or Jennifer Connelly, or Jim Henson's characters (non-muppet) and innovative art effects.

3) Great movie   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I love this movie. I have it on VHS and looked for it on DVD in the stores and could not find it. If you love Jim Henson you will love this movie. I now have a child and she really enjoyed watching it with me.

4) The Labyrinth's Winding Ways   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
"Labyrinth" is one of the fantasy movies classics of the '80s,forming a triumvirate with "Krull" and Jim Henson's other classic,"The Dark Crystal." "Labyrinth",in a sense,is the strange middle child. It is in between the childlike fantasy of "Dark Crystal" and the more adult themes of "Krull." A young Jennifer Connelly was starring in her first trippin' film, preparing the way for "Requiem for a Dream","Dark City" and "A Beautiful Mind." How fitting one of her first movies would be about a preteen trying to figure out reality."Labyrinth" is about a young girl,Sarah (Connelly) who doesn't want to take care of infant stepbrother,Toby. She calls on goblins to take him away;Jareth (David Bowie),the Goblin King, obliges. Suddenly, Sarah regrets her decision&must venture through a labyrinth to save Toby. "Labyrinth" has more mature themes than children might realize (but it's kid-friendly)There seems to be a mutual attraction between Sarah&Jareth. David Bowie plays Jareth ambiguously,as a seducer,a friend,a villain, and a father figure. He even injects some glam rock into the movie. There's a Freudian quality to Jareth&Sarah's relationship. Jareth's final speech is quite moving, since he tells Sarah all he wanted to do was please her.He comes across as an unrequited lover. The conclusion is rather strange;Sarah rejoices with her friends from the Labyrinth. One can say she has reconciled everyday life with her fantasy life."Labyrinth" stands as a timeless fantasy masterpiece. It comes as no surprise that Peter Jackson considered David Bowie for the role of Saruman. The Glam Rock Master of Orthanc, indeed. Jennifer Connelly balances childlike qualities with more mature ones. The Muppets&production are fantastic. "Labyrinth" is a trippin' journey worth taking.

5) Classic   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I admit that this movie is kind of cheesy. I mean come on, David Bowie wearing super tight pants and hair and makeup that looks like..well you get my point. Though this movie is somewhat cheesy it's also a classic to me. This is one of those unique movies that most people think is weird or stupid. Yes, it has its laughing moments and most of them are cheesy. Another reason why I love this movie so much is because it was developed by Brian Froud. I love Brian Froud and all of his artwork and this, along with The Dark Crystal, have remained very special to me in my heart. This cheesy classic is one to pass on to your children. It's also a good dose of fantasy so don't miss out on it.
