Kevin Costner as a warped serial killer, a pillar of the community whose dark side is embodied by an on-screen William Hurt? You have to admit, it sounds intriguing, right? Mr. Brooks is the vehicle for this unsavory story, and it turns out to be a lot less kicky than it sounds. Mr. Brooks is a Portland, Oregon tycoon and philanthropist whose "addiction" to murder is suddenly re-surfacing--with plenty of help from his sneering alter ego, who generally sits in the back of the car, goading Mr. Brooks on. (The other characters can't see William Hurt in all this, of course.) The unbelievably convoluted plot has Mr. Brooks confronted by a blackmailer (comedian Dane Cook) who has a surprising twist on things, and trailed by a cop (Demi Moore) who comes equipped with her own set of professional and marital woes. As if that weren't enough, when Brooks's daughter (Danielle Panabaker) comes home, it becomes clear that some traits run in the family. The scenes with Costner and Hurt are the best stuff in the film, even if director Bruce Evans can't figure out how to play fair visualizing their presence to others. But the script, which among other whoppers make Demi Moore's character a millionaire, is just too unbelievable to stomach. If William Hurt's character provided a running commentary for this movie, there wouldn't be anything left after he got through mocking it. --Robert HortonThe Cast of Mr. BrooksKevin CostnerWilliam HurtDemi MooreDane CookMarg HelgenbergerDanielle PanabakerBeyond Mr. BrooksMr. Brooks on Blu-RayMr. Brooks: Music From The Motion PictureMore from MGMStills from Mr. Brooks2) Description
Consider MR. BROOKS. A successful businessman. A generous philanthropist. A loving father and devoted husband. Seemingly, he's perfect. But Mr. Brooks has a secret... he is also the notorious Thumbprint Killer and no one has ever suspected it... until now.

1) So Much More [Rating: 4 out of 5]
This is way better than I had expected. Costner is mostly a miss these days in the roles I have seen him in. This is by far his best character and acting in years. William Hurt is great as his alter ego. I enjoyed Demi's performance and Dane Cook wasn't bad in his first true dramatic turn. This is a really interesting character study. Even though you know Costner is the killer, it is full of twists and turns. Without giving anything away, I wish they would have cut the last 30 seconds and left the ending with him and his daughter. Either way, it was a good ending and a strong movie overall. The blu-ray is a crystal clear transfer and the sounds are incredible. Gunfire seems to be much higher and I jumped when it came blasting out of my back speakers. This is certainly worth watching and purchasing.2) Move over, Hannibal, there's a new name in 'Serial' Thrills! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I'm not going to over-analyze this movie. It was not perfect, just perfectly entertaining. Great casting with a different kind of role for Kevin Costner. His chemistry with William Hurt was enough for me, but the entwining subplots were also interesting. Life is full of twists, turns, and entanglements, and 2 hours with MR. BROOKS kept me entertained, looking ahead, and wanting more!3) Great Movie [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I highly reccommend this movie. It is probably one of the best suspense movies I've seen in the past year.4) Wretched, Phony Failure of a Film [Rating: 2 out of 5]
At first I thought it was a parody. Then I realized the people who made this movie were serious. They actually thought they could make a good film about a unrealistic serial killer and his phony life, his fake alter ego (I will never forgive William Hurt, regardless of how good Kiss Of The Spiderwoman was), and all sorts of other serial killers. Demi Moore couldn't be more unbelievable. She needs to stay in Idaho, grinding on her boytoy and raising her kids. But with such a bad script, nobody could have pulled it off. Costner is retched, just sleepwalking throught the film -- you can almost see him counting the dollars he got paid to act in his absurd role. Dane Cook is the only actor in the movie that seems to realize that the movie is a joke, and he just shifts into standup mode and stays there. In general, the whole movie appears to have been made by people who spent too much time making music videos -- it has a shallow, ignorant tone to it. You can almost hear the team behind it screaming "Yeah, and then this other guy is a serial killer, and then the daughter may be a serial killer, and then Demi gets chased by a serial killer! Yeah, that's the ticket! And then we can have this big shootout scene where Demi gets to look really hot, shooting her gun and stuff! And then Kevin can be like, you know, a cool dad, but he's got like this dark side, so like, he goes to AA to deal with his addiction to killling, yeah, that's so cool."OH.MY.GOD.THIS.MOVIE.WAS.SO.BAD.I have to talk to the lady next door that encouraged me to watch it. I got some payback for her. Maybe I'll return the favor by lending her my copy of Shoot 'Em Up, which was just as bad, if not worse.5) Very good movie [Rating: 4 out of 5]
I'm not a Costner fan, generally, but I think he did a great job with this role. It's definately not a "who dunnit" film; you know Costner is a serial killer. It's more of a character study. MB is clever with subtle (and dark) humor. There were aspects of the plot that seemed a bit disjointed but it holds together reasonably well. I think they cheesed the ending a little bit, however.Recommended.
