An underrated little picture, Real Genius offers a rare college comedy that doesn't rely on gross-out humor--and a look at Val Kilmer before he turned into a star. A high school whiz kid (Gabriel Jarret) arrives at a brainy college, where the crème de la crème of the science students are marshaled under an ambitious professor (expert villain William Atherton). Unbeknownst to them, the kids are working on a weapons system that the prof plans on selling to the government. The star student, and chief rabble-rouser, is played by Kilmer, in good early form as a cocky genius who hasn't lost touch with his goofy side. The director is Martha Coolidge, whose Valley Girl was one of the brightest (and most unexpected) of '80s comedies; she keeps the movie perking along and never worries about dumbing down a film that just happens to be about smart people. --Robert Horton

Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5

1) Love this movie...   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I'd highly recommend watching this movie.. it's pure genius (no pun intended). It's funny (even for 80's humor). I never get tired of watching it. It's especially great to watch before finals/tests cause it motivates me to study. go buy it now!

2) Not just for nerds!   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
This movie brings me back to my teen years when I would watch it alongside my brothers. It's not just for boys because I enjoy it very much still! Val Kilmer's character is refreshingly contradictory of a typical nerd. We can all identify with a young boy who discovers that life is not all about others' expectations. And, of course, there's a little bit of mystery, some good versus evil, and good ol' college fun, too. This movie is great for all the geeks out there, but it is also fun and rewarding for everyone to watch.

3) Never Gets Old   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
This could have been a complete disaster. I think only the creative casting of some very talented actors and the fact that it is a light-hearted romp of a comedy keeps it from nose-diving into the contrived climax. It's occasionally corny, but fun. Oddly, it doesn't seem too dated. There are period references, but can easily taken in historical context. I was probably 17 when I first watched Real Genius, probably at a hotel or at a friend's house on cable. I can say that this movie has withstood the test of time for me. It's as funny today as it was then. Michelle Meyrink is an excellent counterpoint to the typical bimbos in teen movies. I'd have like to see her in some more films. Val Kilmer must have been trying to break into Hollywood here. He's really the movie's heart. Don't expect A Beautiful Mind here, but played back-to-back with Weird Science would be a great 80's retro geek fest.

4) *Great 80's Movie!*   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Yes,it's one of those 1980 movies.I love them. This is a very good one indeed.Smart and funny.Anyone who enjoys the 80's movies will enjoy this.It was great seeing Val Kilmer in this.Watch it and enjoy.

5) Classic Val   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Do not be fooled by the cover, this is the funny film you remember featuring Val Kilmer. It is still as enjoyable to watch as ever. It is not to be missed if looking for classic Val movies from the 80's.
