With only one major star (Denzel Washington), an appealing cast of fresh unknowns, and a winning emphasis of substance over self-indulgent style, Boaz Yakin's Remember the Titans is, like Rudy before it, a football movie that will be fondly remembered by anyone who sees it. Set in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971, the fact-based story begins with the integration of black and white students at T. C. Williams High School. This effort to improve race relations is most keenly felt on the school's football team, the Titans, and bigoted tempers flare when a black head coach (Washington) is appointed and his victorious predecessor (Will Patton) reluctantly stays on as his assistant. It's affirmative action at its most potentially volatile, complicated by the mandate that the coach will be fired if he loses a single game in the Titans' 13-game season. The players represent a hotbed of racial tension, but as the team struggles toward unity and gridiron glory, Remember the Titans builds on several subplots and character dynamics to become an inspirational drama of Rocky-like proportions. Yakin--whose debut, Fresh, was one of the best independent films of the 1990s--understands the value of connecting small scenes to form a rich climactic payoff. Likewise, Washington provides a solid dramatic foundation (his coach is obsessively harsh, but for all the right reasons) while giving his younger co-stars ample time in the spotlight. The result is a film that achieves what it celebrates: an enriching sense of unity that's unquestionably genuine. (Ages 9 and older) --Jeff Shannon

2) Description
Based on a remarkable true story, "Remember the Titans" follows the explosive dramatic events that took place in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971 when African-American football coach Herman Boone (Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington) was hired to guide an integrated but racially polarized high school team, the T.C. Williams Titans. Angry, stubborn and a rigid task master, Boone faces a cool reception from the team's players as well as an awkward relationship with assistant coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton), a local white coach with seniority and a tradition of winning who was bypassed for the job. As the two men learn to overcome their ignorance and bigotry and realize that they have much in common and integrity, honor and a strong work ethic. They work together to transform a group of angry unfocused players into a dynamic winning team of responsible young men. In the process, they also unite a divided community and ensure that Virginia will always "Remember the Titans."

1) Simply Fantastic.   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
The Story: In 1971 the T.C. Williams High School is desegregated and Herman Boone Played by Denzel Washington is hired as the Head Coach of the football team in place of the previous coach Bill Yoast played by Bill Patton. This replacing causes an outrage as the white kids refuse to play for a black coach. In order to get the white and black students to play together Boone hires Yoast as his defensive coach and takes the kids to camp to give them a tough lesson in brotherhood. After hard work and being pushed by the coach to get to know each other and see past the colour of each others skin the Titans are born and on entering the season they become an unstoppable team. The Review: Simply the story telling, the inspirational acting and the fact that this is based on a true story makes this film a masterpiece and something truly memorable. As a person who takes an interest in the race relations of the mid 60s and 70s America, this is an educational film that shows me these decades weren't all full of racial hatred. Denzel, once again takes on a convincing role as Coach Boone. Washington embraces roles from this era and he showed us once again why he is considered one of the greatest African American actors of all time. Ryan Hurst who plays Gerry Bertier, and who in my opinion is a very underrated actor gave an exceptional performance when displaying the young white kid full of hate who then learned the error of his ways to become best friends with Julius Campbell his Black athletic equal.A very good movie which I would highly recommend to the masses.

3) A good film.   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Film based on a true story about a high school football team at a newly integrated high school in Virginia, America in the early 70s where black and white kids are able to play football together for the first time, and the struggles of their coach (played by Denzel Washington) to overcome the prejudices of his white and black football players towards one another as well as prejudices in the wider community. Usually when I see `based on a true story' at the start of a film I think `uh-oh' but this film thankfully did not pander to the clichés often found in such films and delivered a satisfactory moral tale - tempered with tragedy - that was not overly sentimental, as well as a satisfying ending to boot. Denzel Washington is as ever excellent as the coach standing up to not just white but also black prejudice and it is also good to see Hayden Panettiere - as Denzel Washington's assistant coach's young daughter - in a pre-Heroes role. A good film.

4) BEST MOVIE EVER!!!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is the best movie ever. I love movies but especially those that are really inspiring and as in this case; based upon a true story. I have watched this again and again and honestly, each time, I am moved by the whole story. It was MY time since I was in high school too when this was happening and the music of that time brings back memories. Mostly the acting is very well done, Denzel is terrific and there are many others who gave fine performances. I love football but even if I didnt' this movie gives a fine character/human interest perspective that can't be beat. Its really about people and how they react in situations that test them. I think it will remain one great movie favorite for me and others for a long time to come.

5) A great Blu Ray Film   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
I am really picking and choosing the Blu Ray discs that I purchase.Like many, I was in the stores and collecting DVDs every Tuesday and I knew release dates of DVDs that I wanted to purchase. And of course I got suckered into buyind the "special editions" of some of my favorites. So now here we go with round ? and purchasing some of the same movies on Blu Ray.So my setup is a 40 inch 1080p Sony Bravia (V-series) and a PS3 for the player. Simply stated, this movie is very good on Blu Ray and worth the money if you liked the film on DVD. The colors during the training camp sequences really stand out, down to each blade of green grass and the stains on the white uniforms. Never before have I seen so clearly how much spit flies from Denzels mouth as the coach of this team. All of the Disney Blu Rays I have purchased so far have not disappointed and this one is as good as all the rest.If you like this movie on DVD, you'll like it more on Blu-Ray.
