1) Amazon.com essential recording
One of the must-own soul albums, Greatest Hits is fattened with five extra tracks in this reissue. Al Green brought the Memphis Sound into the '70s by slightly softening it, melding smooth funkiness with his miraculous voice and innate sensitivity: his love songs, while perfect for the bedroom, are as conversational as they are blatantly seductive. By adding the likes of "Belle," a 1977 single that's a near-goodbye to the pop life, to the original lineup of "Let's Stay Together," "Look What You Done for Me," "Call Me," and the others, this edition of Greatest Hits also intriguingly fills out the story. --Rickey Wright

1) Some oldies but goodies [Rating: 3 out of 5]
Although I was not pleased with all the songs on this recording, the ones I wanted was there. Brought back memories galore. I recommend it .2) Isaac Hayes isn't the only one who makes hot buttered soul... [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is my only Al Green album, but I like it a ton. Every song on this album is a fantastic one: nothing even approaches being a loser. Al Green isn't universally respected like Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye, and I'd like to know why: he really is a great singer. His critics think he's boring, but I don't buy that, unless you consider all orchestrated R&B boring, in which case you'd be writing off everything Motown; Curtis Mayfield; Isaac Hayes; Aretha Franklin and several other masters of the form, which is unfair. Anyway, like any good soul singer Al Green can really get down and testify, which he does on every cut: whether it's gospel-soul with raunchy lyrics you wouldn't hear in church (Love and Happiness, my favorite Al Green song - I saw him performing it on TV a couple years ago, and it was really cool - he took off his shirt and gave a flower to every woman in the audience, the sly old romantic; Tired of Being Alone; Let's Get Married - oh, he's got a bit more than marriage on his mind; Here I Am (Come and Take Me)), the soulful ballads (Call Me (Come Back Home), I'm Still in Love with You, which my brother thought contained the lyric "shut up and love me too" - of course, he was wrong, it's just a stupid funny story; Let's Stay Together, which absolutely rules; You Oughta Be with Me; Look What You Done for Me; Livin' for You, which has to be one of the album's very best cuts), peppy, poppy soul (L-O-V-E (Love), Sha-La-La-La (Make Me Happy)), pure gospel (Belle, which has an awesome fadeout), even disco (Full of Fire). And then there's the smokin' take on I Can't Get Next to You, slowed down and laden with innuendos not found on the Temptations' original, with a cool guitar solo added in for good measure. I might've missed a few tracks, but they're all good: my favorites are Tired of Being Alone, Call Me, I'm Still in Love with You, Here I Am (Come and Take Me), Love and Happiness, Let's Stay Together, I Can't Get Next To You, Let's Get Married and Livin' for You. But again, every song here is tops. As I've said before this is my only Al Green album (can anyone point me to any others), but it gets constant rotation when I'm in the mood for something mellow and soulful. No one, but no one, is better than Al Green when it comes to heart-wrenching, gut-churning tales of heartbreak and woe.I call it singing that is absolutely emotionally honest and believable and easy to relate to (if you've ever been in any of these situations--and who hasn't?)The man (with his voice) has the ability to heal/mend when it comes to matters of the heart. It certainly seems that way.Can't praise him enough.4) Perfect Package for Al Green's Hits [Rating: 5 out of 5]
All the best known Rev. Green songs are here, along with several lesser known, but still enjoyable, selections. This is must-have music for rock and rhythm and blues fans. You will find yourself trying to sing along.5) A Greatest Hits Masterpiece [Rating: 5 out of 5]
A lot if not most greatest hits collections have some hits and some padding.Not this album.This is one great collection.The five songs tacked on at the end made this album a must own masterpiece.If you like Al Green's 70's output,you WILL like this CD.Every single song is a classic.Ol Skool Al Green fans (like myself) might already have at least a couple of his albums already,but this CD sums up why he's soul legend.P.S.:Do yourself a favor and pick up some of his 70's era albums starting with "I'm Still In Love With You" if you haven't already.
