Editorial Reviews (supplied by Amazon.com):

1) Amazon.com
For its first new set of music since 2000's Warning, Green Day tears up the blueprint and comes up with something unexpected: a punk rock concept album built around elaborate melodies, odd tempo changes, and a collection of songs that freely reference classic rock warhorses like the Beatles and Pink Floyd. "She's a Rebel" and "St. Jimmy" might sound like vintage Green Day, but the rest of the disc finds the Northern California trio trying on a variety of different guises: "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is a cliché-strewn Foo Fighters-style power ballad; "Extraordinary Girl" floats on Indian strings; and the hushed "Wake Me Up When September Ends" wouldn't sound entirely out of place on a Jessica Simpson record. It doesn't always work. "Dearly Beloved" eerily resembles the Alarm's "68 Guns," while the title track eerily resembles something Green Day has already done far too many times. But, overall, American Idiot represents a promising step forward. --Aidin Vaziri

2) Album Description
The first original album since 2000 from modern rock superheroes Green Day, American Idiot is one of the most anticipated and controversial albums of the year. Scathing yet self-effacing as it tells the tale of Green Day̢۪s Billie Joe Armstrong, American Idiot is the punk rock epic. "A bold, polished punk opera." (Entertainment Weekly) "They're the biggest, most successful, punk band the world has ever seen. What's more, Green Day's next album may well be their masterpiece." (Kerrang!)

1) Something to say......   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I've been listening to Green Day since about when "Basket Case" came out in 1994. I've seen this band go through rough times during their career and at one point thought they would break up. Straight out of producing "Warning" in 2000 Green Day stopped for a few years until 2004. That's when I heard on the radio (it's a very rare occasion were I listen to FM radio) "American Idiot". Which isn't their strongest song on the album and is a pop song. But when it comes down to it I can really look past that. And I have spoken to several people about this album. And some of them have stated that Green Day is no longer punk, they sold out, and it's their worst album to date.Okay let's break it down:1. What really is punk? I don't know, since there really isn't any definition for it. Everyone has their own personal views about what punk is. There really isn't any real definition for punk. Honestly, as long as they still care about their fans and music. It doesn't really matter if their punk. In this album there is still Green Day in this album. For any fan that said that their not punk? Look at "Warning", it's basically all acoustic album. It's nothing I would of thought Green Day would do in a full length album.2. What does it mean if someone "sold out"? Green Day still has a passion for making music. And you can hear that in this album. As well as in "Bullet in a Bible". Like it or not, Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre are maturing as adults. So like or not, Green Day changed after "Nimord". To thoughs people who have said that they sold out when they signed up with Reprise. Why go into the music business in the first place if you don't want to be heard. You have to sign onto some label major or not. 3. Worst Album to date...I don't know. That's hard to judge considering Green Day matured over the years. I guess people don't like the fact the musicians can change and mature as well. Yes, I know it's overplayed on the radio. I like how they can change and have a different point of view on life. Besides siging about getting high. (expect an occasional reference in this album.)My basic thing is that I love this album even though it is over-played. But what Green Day says in this album does need to be said. (Oh yes, they kinda started a trend with this political stuff qith bands: "Ten Thousand Fist", "I'm not Dead", and "Minutes to Midnight" to name a few. If that's not influential I don't knw what is)

2) Brilliant album   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
A really, really good album from a band that's been around awhile. When we were punkers back in the early nineties, I had a few friends who were Green Day fans... it wasn't until Dookie, and "Longview," that I really started listening to them... even then, it was always with some embarassment and hesitation, as they weren't considered quite "punk" enough due to their commercial success. But I let myself start loving their music when I first heard American Idiot. Except for the title song, they're almost all gems... really brilliant, and courageous, odes to life and living, and having a thoughtful, if troubled, existence... I'm proud to say I'm a Green Day fan. Punk Cookery, The Punk Rocker's Cafe Cookbook, Vegetarian Specialties

3) Idiotic Goodness   [Rating: 5 out of 5]

TO ALL WHO THINKS (INLCUDING THEMSELVES)METALLICA IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL BAND IN THE WORLDWELL NO, SADLY MISTAKEN. GREEN DAY IS, THEYVE BUILT THEY'REWAY UP AND MADE A PUNK ROCK OPERA THAT SOLD A BAGILLION COPIESBUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IS STILL PLAYING 3 YEARS LATER AND TOOK OVER THE WORLD BY STORM. METALLICA'S LAST ALBUMWAS JUST..NOT EVEN A WORD FOR IT.

4) I Don't Like Green Day, But I like This Album!   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
I don't like Green Day. I don't really know what possessed me to purchase this album from a band who I cannot relate to, is much younger than me and writes songs with explicit lyrics which really turns me off. Somehow the subliminal messages of "Buy Me" worked and I bought this CD. I love it! I have to admit I like every song on it and the "Novacaine Song" is so good, I can't get enough of it! I don't know how these guys did it, but I'll gladly buy another album from Green Day if they continue on this path. Well done boys! - Ciao

5) not your ordinary day   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
While many people have criticized me for thinking American Idiot is Green Day's best album, I will continue to listen to it anyway because the vocal melodies are extremely catchy, and even though the sound of the album overall is very commercialized, that doesn't interfere with my enjoyment at all. The songwriting really feels like it's better than ever before. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is probably the best song.
