A glimpse of the future, and not because of its huge influence and umpteen million sales. The poor-little-rich-boy protest "Out ta Get Me" intimates that Axl Rose's egotism and martyr complex were soon to grow bigger than his head; still, Appetite's night-train wreck of punk and metal sounds and sensibilities make it more than just an emblem of its time. Whether GN'R are dancing with Mr. Brownstone, penning a callow kiss-off letter to some chick named Michelle, or passing out on somebody else's sofa, this was and remains a savage journey to the heart of the American--or at least the Hollywood--dream. --Rickey Wright2) Album Description

Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5
1) I heart my GnR [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Of course I gave this 5 stars. This band was, is, and will always be my favorite. I NEVER get sick of hearing any of their music from ANY of their albumns. The talent is over the top, mindblowing, and completely fantastic. This music is the best! Please, ignore all those foolish 1 star reviewers. I mean, if you SERIOUSLY think that, you're a complete head-case, I laughed when I read them. How could they expect to be taken seriously with opinions like that?! Anyway, you should own this CD by now, you should have had to replace your worn out tape from the 80's with a CD by now. If you haven't, what are you waiting for, DO IT!2) One of the greatest rock albums ever! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Appetite for Destruction is probably one of the greatest rock albums ever to be produced. The album really can be listened to in it's entirety with really no filler songs. A couple of the songs such as Sweet Child O' Mine, Paradise City, and Welcome to Jungle would make it in the top rock songs of all time. Mr. Brownstone and Nighttrain are also voted perfect 10's in my opinion. Only a couple of songs would not be rated 9 on a scale of 1 to 10. Think about you and You're Crazy are the only songs that could be passed over but, they are still worth a listen. This album made Guns n' Roses rock stars back then and they will always be remembered for this album. This album was easily their best with other pretty good ones to follow. If you love rock music and do not have this one, buy it. You will probably agree with almost everyone else that this is a five star album. Anyone who voted it lower than that probably has a problem with Axl Rose and his odd ways!3) Life Changing [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This album changed my life, plain and simple. All of the songs on this monster of an album are great. Believe the hype, this is one of the last great classic rock albums ever made.4) One of hard rock's finest [Rating: 5 out of 5]
They took the best elements of 70's hard rock and made it harder, all the while keeping melody and sophisticated elements intact. Even if you're not a fan of Axl's voice (it will grow on you, if you give it a chance), the music is so compelling that you can't help but enjoy it. From radio staples like Sweet Child O' Mine to the no-holds-barred testerone filled Welcome To The Jungle, there is something here for everyone (with the exception of a ballad - but this is a 100% hard rock album). It's already been 20 years and this album remains one of the greats. Timeless indeed. It encapsulates all things rock - the music, the style, the women, the drugs, the crowds, the sex, the debauchery - it's all there in the lyrics, the tempo, and artwork on the album sleeve. This debut album put GnR on the map, and we're all the richer for it.5) "It gets worse here every day..." [Rating: 1 out of 5]
First of all, in Axl Rose, we have one of the worst vocalists in the history of rock- indeed, when I listen to some of these songs (such as "It's So Easy" and "Think About You") I wonder why the hell anybody thought it'd be a good idea to give this twerp the mic. He tries painfully hard to sound like a combination of Bon Scott and Johnny Rotten, and winds up completely missing the point- he doesn't have an ounce of the former's boozehound charisma or the latter's seething menace. Instead, he comes off sounding like the whiney, egotistical, self-righteous blowhard that he is, attacking these songs with the kind of banshee screech usually reserved for drunken frat guy idiots at three in the morning. He's annoying, repetitive, unoriginal, and moronic. Naturally, he thinks he's a genius. The rest of the band is better- Bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler make for a pretty good rhythm section. Besides, Duff has a really cool name. In addition, Izzy (Stradlin) and Slash are excellent guitarists- they have a way with face melting solos and jackhammer riffs. Too bad they were given such horrible songs to work with.I mean, what the hell is supposed to be so good about these songs? I don't even like the big 3: "Paradise City" is annoyingly repetitive, with an incredibly dull chorus that spills into excruciatingly cheesy verses. It's about as hard-rockin' as your least favorite arena pop anthem, and its dated just as well (i.e., horribly). "Welcome To The Jungle" fares a bit better: Axl's lyrics are pure bad boy posturing, but the riff is cool and there's some real attitude to the whole thing. Still, it isn't that hard rock masterpiece that some see it as. And if you ask me, "Sweet Child O' Mine" is an unbelievably overrated power ballad with a dull melody and some painfully insincere vocals. Those three tracks set the template- this album is full of labored, unoriginal sleaze rock ("Mr. Brownstone," "Nightrain"), dull hard rock workouts ("It's So Easy," whose casual misogyny is more unintentionally funny than offensive), egotistical posturing ("Out Ta Get Me"), and cheesy, laughably insincere balladry ("Think About You" is excruciating where "Sweet Child O' Mine" is merely annoying). "You're Crazy" is pure fake sleaze, and "Anything Goes" is instantly forgettable. There are a few decent songs here- "My Michelle" is suitably tough and funky, and "Rocket Queen" has an okay chorus, even though those annoying sexual moans during the instrumental break make want to kill somebody. Still, even the best moments here are little more than mediocre. Plus, the whole thing has this really glitzy 80s production that's just irritating as hell. This is absolute crap.
