Editorial Reviews (supplied by Amazon.com):

1) From Amazon.co.uk
Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, "Rehab" becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it's echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. Winehouse's lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated: on "You Know I'm No Good", she's unapologetic about her unfaithfulness. But she can also be witty, as on "Me & Mrs Jones" when she berates a boyfriend with "You made me miss the Slick Rick gig". Back to Black is a refreshingly mature soul album, the best of its kind for years. --Ted Kord

2) Album Description
Hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a cross between Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill, British soul singer Amy Winehouse's U.S. debut, Back To Black hits the US amid a flurry of accolades, radio and TV buzz unprecedented in recent years for a young siren. Her brassy mix of emotive vocals tinged with 60's girl-group stylings, sly funk, and anguished jazz, sparked the New York Daily News to crown Back To Black a "marvelous debut that would do Etta James proud" while New Yorker Magazine called her "a fierce English performer whose voice combines the smoky depths of a jazz chanteuse with the heated passion of a soul singer," and Spin Magazine affirming "there's never been A British star quite like her." Back To Black smolders with a bristling fusion of old school doo-wop/soul inflected uprisings, (the charismatic singer/songwriter wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album) brewing instant classics such as the Shirley Ellis influenced "Rehab," the Supremes tinged title song "Back To Black," the aching "Wake Up Alone," and the album's closer, "Addicted."

2) Even metal heads like me can enjoy this album!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I had never heard of Amy Winehouse until the Grammy Awards this year. I'll be honest, I haven't watched a Grammy Award show in years---I prefer watching movies or DVDs. It was fate that made me watch it.I have always enjoyed heavy metal and hard rock, so the fact I was watching this award show was amazing. BUT, Amy Winehouse's performance made such an impression on me that I bought this album and am currently enjoying it immensely! Her music, to me, is very unique. It is somewhat jazz with a little rock, soul and even a bit of rap thrown in. Amazing music from a Jewish girl from Great Britain. She performs with an orchestra and the music just seems "refreshing" to me.The songs I like are Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Me & Mrs. Jones and Back to Black (no, not an AC/DC song). I want to point out that I myself never took drugs or had an alcohol problem but I love the song Rehab. So, my Amazon buds I highly recommend this album, even though she is definitely not hard rock or heavy metal, but one great singer and songwriter, no matter what genre you call her...BUY this album!

3) When will we get time to be just friends? Just friends...?   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Great record... if you resist 'cause of AMY's wretched reputation, consider it a plus... this album is the album of the decade, and it is superior. In just a few decades, or perhaps a century or two, this record may be forgotten, but right now, AMY is hot. She has mined the great R&B, Motown Pop, and BLUES records, and who knows what else, to create an homage to record making, and individual artistic statement in such medium, that is both monumental and personal. With heartbreaking clarity, and gorgeous arrangements, AMY refines her soulful, R&B, Pop idiosyncratic vocals 'round these stunningly sensitive and intelligent lyrics and rich tunes that she wrote. A rare artist's record for an artist who knew exactly what she was doing, BACK TO BLACK is a jaw-droppingly marvelous, goose-pimple raising, lovely lovingly lush indulgence with artistry to match. This is not fashion; this is style. I have to give this album the highest rating for being the best record of the last 10 years.

5) Back to Black *Spa*rk*les*!*   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I absolutely love Amy Winehouse's cd BACK TO BLACK. After seeing her perform on the Grammy's, I just had to get this cd cause I liked the song "Rehab" and "You Know I'm No Good."As for the rest of the cd, well I was in for a nice surprise... Winhouse's vocals are soulful, sultry and strong, sounding a lot like Shirley Bassey in her prime. I can totally imagine her doing a remake of "Gold Finger."And the music is a great blend of 60s girl-group, soul & motown all working together creating a unique sound not found on contemporary artists' cds. On the title song "Back to Black" it sounds like there's a sample of the Supremes "Baby Love" and there's even shades of Burt Bacharach on "Love Is A Losing Game" (think "Walk On By").Although definitely tinged with a 60s-mod-rock-motown-dowop-girl group sound, BACK TO BLACK doesn't sound dated or out-of-synch with today. I think Ms. Winehouse might start a 60s revival, yet!
