Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts, hastily made and released some five months after she won the 2005 American Idol crown, was surprisingly solid and tuneful. For her follow-up, producer Mark Bright steers her toward the big Martina McBride skies, with a plethora of strings and huge emotional crescendos. Underwood co-wrote four songs, mostly with the tried-and-true tunesmiths who made Some Hearts soar. On the torchy heartache ballad "I Know You Won't," she gives a beautifully nuanced and controlled performance, but if that song would suit any number of lush female pop stars from Celine Dion on down, "Flat on the Floor" rocks hard while preserving co-writer Ashley Monroe's Appalachian angst. Still, there are missteps: the easy tears of the unlikely war ballad "Just a Dream," a too-obvious attempt to repeat the sass of "Before He Cheats" ("The More Boys I Meet"), and the Shania-ish bad-girl-on-Cuervo stomp of "Last Name." The big payoff, then, is how much 24-year old Underwood has improved as a vocalist. How often listeners line up for this Carnival Ride depends on their attitude about country music's continual melding with pop, and how they feel about a princess upstart taking home the awards that used to go to her heroes. --Alanna NashCarrie Underwood PhotosMore from Carrie UnderwoodSome HeartsAmerican Idol Season 4 - The Showstoppers

1) Carrie's Carnival Ride CD [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Although I enjoyed this CD better than her first, I'm looking forward to having a Carrie's "Top Hits" CD released. I anticipate this may well be a future option and I will eagerly support its sale. Carrie is a top notch performer and a beautiful young lady.2) A good looking blonde with a nice voice...but what else?? [Rating: 2 out of 5]
Once upon a time there was a actually a music industry where talent, originality, and true artistry were the requirements for becoming a star. Even those with great talent that deserved great success had to struggle for years to pay their dues in the business before getting a recording contract. Today it is a totally different story. All you need today is about six months of karaoke experience under your belt, look like a Playboy centerfold, and have Simon Cowell {who has as much musical ability as the guy across the street} look you over and give you his stamp of approval. Overnight you are suddenly a grammy-winning, million-selling superstar without having to pay any dues whatsoever! Maybe if Cowell and the people behind American Idol actually cared about promoting and finding real "musicians" with real talent to offer instead of good looking karaoke singers, our national music scene in the 21st century wouldn't be so pathetic.Yes, Carrie is a beautiful woman with a nice voice...a voice that sounds like ten thousand nine hundred and sixty five other female voices that have saturated the airwaves for the last dozen years. There's nothing unique or original about Carrie Underwood or her music which is exactly the way Nashville wants it. What you hear on this CD is the same cookie-cutter material offered to every other cookie-cutter female country vocalist in Nashville today. Is there really any difference between Carrie and Kellie Pickler??? Both are blonde, good looking, nearly the same age, and have no style or originality at all. How many more beautiful blonde "clones" will ole' Simon and American Idol be dishing out to us over the next few years??What I would love to see Carrie {and all future American Idol winners} do is find her own style, dare to walk her own path, and start a revolution in Nashville like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson did 30 years ago. Buck the system and stand up against the music executives and producers who are keeping today's young stars from making music on their own terms while forcing them to clone every other singer in the top 40!We all should wish Carrie the best, because once she's been around for ten years and doesn't look at cute as she did at 23, it will be time for American Idol to replace her on the charts with another 23 year old blonde who looks and sings just like her...3) Go Carrie Go [Rating: 4 out of 5]
I am a huge Carrie Underwood fan, from the first time I saw her on American Idol. She keeps getting better and better as time goes by. She will be around for a long time. The CD is worth every penny. I look forward to her next one and the one after that and so on. If you are a Carrie Underwood fan (or even if you are not) you will love this CD.4) Great [Rating: 4 out of 5]
