A CD is always more compelling when you know it's lifted from the artist's autobiography, and that's certainly the case with Confession, Usher's first record since 2001's 8701. The Atlanta singer's string of hits over the past decade have been decidedly PG-13 rated, almost veering towards teen pop, but he's changed all that on this co-produced offering, which he claims is "the real him." It would be too simplistic to just brand this record a break-up record, chronicling his public split with TLC's Rozonda "Chili" Thomas; it is that, but so much more. It would be more accurate to call this Usher's coming of age record, bridging the gap from boy to man, as he navigates the emotional fallout from the disintegration of his relationship, and the events that led up to it--real or imagined. But other than a guilty conscience, it seems unclear why Usher feels compelled to disgorge his secret life, as he documents his infidelities, transgressions, and emotional perfidy in the album's prodigious twenty one songs, that range from insinuating sultry R&B grooves to the decidedly crunky "Yeah," which pairs an insistent keyboard romp with Lil' Jon's assertive beats, and Ludacris' rather humid rhymes. --Jaan Uhelszki2) Album Description

1) Confessions about this album (3 and 1/2 stars) [Rating: 3 out of 5]
Bonus tracks or without bonus tracks this album was highly overrated in 2004. Now I'm not saying this album is garbage. It's good but it was not worth the excess hype around it. Yeah feat Lil Jon and Ludacris was a great choice for the first single before the radio beat that song into your subconscious. Burn, Confessions and Caught Up are nice follow up singles. Other highlights: Jadakiss shows up on the remix of Throwback. The Robin Thicke-produced Can U Handle It is pretty good. But there are plenty of tracks that scream filler on this album. Tracks like Superstar(the interlude and the song), Truth Hurts, Simple Things, Bad Girl and Follow Me sound like songs that were put on the album to take up space. Take Your Hand and Do It To Me will bore you to tears and That's What It's Made For is instantly laughable. Bonus tracks: My Boo feat Alicia Keys was a nice duet. Red Light is cool but doesnt seem like the type of song you'd listen to outside of the club scene. Seduction is okay but someone needs to tell Usher stick to singing. His rapping is just as bad as R Kelly's. Confessions is a lot better than the original but Confessions Part 2 featuring Kanye West, Shyne and Twista is garbage. Bottom Line: Confessions is an overhyped but good release and the bonus tracks doesnt add much to that fact. Usher is still a good singer but he needs to put more effort into his albums instead of putting effort into a couple of songs and going through the motions on the rest of the album. Standouts: YEAH, THROWBACK, CONFESSIONS, BURN, CAUGHT UP, CAN U HANDLE IT and MY BOO.2) Usher did it again! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I purchased the original confessions, which of course was in heavy rotation on my cd player for 04 & 05. One of the best cds of the year. My original confessions cd became badly damaged and scratched due to playing it so much and so long that I replaced it with this bonus CD.IT IS A BONUS TO HAVE THE EXTRA TRACKS TO A CD THAT I ALREADY LOVED AND CONFESSIONS REMAINS IN MY TOP 10 FAV ALBUMS OF ALL TIME. bUY THIS CD IF YOU NEED TO REPLACE YOUR OLD ONE.3) TO BUY THAT CD WAS VERY EXCITING, I¨M HAPPY [Rating: 5 out of 5]
USHER IS THE BEST SINGER IN THE MOMENTI LIKE IT ALL HIS SONGSYolanda Espinosa Obando4) I'm an adult and I'm not an Usher fan but..... [Rating: 4 out of 5]
I'm an adult and I'm not an Usher fan but I really like this CD. Once you delete that dumb azz "Yeah!" song you actually have a rather pleasant R&B listening experience from this punk. I hate to admit it but this album is very good.As for the cry babies who wonder why the CD was re-released with extra songs and re-mixes it's because the record company that the "original" should have done a lot better so they tweaked it and came back with a better product. I for one am glad they did. I am happy with my purchse.5) Meh/10 [Rating: 3 out of 5]
Usher has a bit of talent, but I wouldn't put him up there with Ne-Yo or Corinne Bailey Rae. He makes music for the masses.I like to call his genre Pop/R&B. He does the slow, sad love songs sometimes, but he usually (well, lately) sticks with the more upbeat grooves. And this disc isn't short on that.It just lacks substance sometimes. My favorite tracks are the following:Throwback (Hot, HOT beat)BurnCaught UpRed LightAnd I don't enjoy the song on a whole, but the initial runs on Superstar are fantastic! The beat also possesses a dreamy, and somewhat hypnotizing beat. You can just relax to it. While some of these songs ARE good, I can't help but get the feeling that it's more filler material than you know what to do with! Are you throwing a party?Do you want music that doesn't take itself too seriously?Did you just lose the love of your life?Do you just want to kick back and relax?Do you like it when a guy croons a falsetto note? Then you should buy this album. If not, then don't.3 stars.
