Scott Weiland. Slash. Duff McKagen. Matt Sorum. It doesn't seem like a good idea to put these people in a room together, let alone a band. But it was the same exact explosive element of danger and low I.Q. scores that made both of these players' former groups--Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N' Roses--sell billions, so why stand in their way? The music on Contraband sounds appropriately monumental, all window-quivering riffs, and ticker-tape parade choruses. "Do It For the Kids" and "Set Me Free" take direct inspiration from Nirvana, meaning they are brilliantly raw, raucous, and indecent. It's great stuff. The power-ballads like "Fall to Pieces" and "You Got No Right," however, are more heartburn than heartbreak when compared to past achievements like, oh, let's say "Sweet Child O' Mine." --Aidin Vaziri2) Album Description

1) Who else but Velvet Revolver [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Velvet Revolver's Contraband album was released June 8, 2004. Upon hitting the shelves, Contraband created a lot of commotion. Of the two released albums (the other one being Libertad), Contraband is certainly the better of the two. A little history lesson for those of you who do not know. Velvet Revolver's roots are found in 80's metal band "Guns N' Roses". Both Slash (lead guitar) and Duff McKagan (Bass) and Matt Sorum (Drums: who replaced Steven Adler) are all part of the band now known as Velvet Revolver, (originally The Project) Velvet Revolver's newest additions, Dave Kushner (Suicidal Tendencies, Wasted Youth) and Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) have completed the band, and created the amazing album Contraband. Contraband debuted at #1 on Billboards top 200 albums. Now let's take a look inside of the album. The album starts off with their hit "Sucker Train Blues", which gives you a pretty good taste of how the rest of the album goes. In Contraband, you'll find the ballad "Fall To Pieces, Set Me Free (from the Hulk soundtrack) and of course, Slither. Velvet Revolver pulled it together in their first album Contraband, and I, among many others, expected nothing short of exceptional, and, I'm glad to say, received exactly that. I rated "Contraband" a 5 out of 5 stars because the album exceeded the hype that came before it's release, which is quite rare in the music industry these days.2) Let's not waste talent... [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Since Axl W. Rose is such a duchxbag a lot of talented musicians who counted on him during the 90's have moved on. Who did they get? Talented STP singer Wieland. Think about the mix between STP and Gn'r. Some may think of mixing JD and Jager but oddly enough, it works. As far as copy protection goes? Well if that is your concern, yeah, it is copy protected. Just be warned. Other than that, it is nice to hear the STP frontman singing to hardcore music and deliver a package that is worthy. You be the judge, but it is a nice revert to the oldschool that we used to know and love. Enjoy.3) better than expected [Rating: 4 out of 5]
What a great album. Some of the best hard rock I have heard. The songs just have a great energy about them. Much better than I anticipated this album to be. "Dirty Little Thing" just smokes. A great quick number. "Sucker Train Blues" is one of the best albums openers in a long time. No real bad song.4) Scott was better with the Under-Rated, Brilliant DeLeo Brothers [Rating: 3 out of 5]
The riffs on the "Heavy" tunes of Contraband seem like last-minute/same-day studio creations. Slash has been way-more-creative structuring songs. He's going through easy motions. His guitar playing sounds like he's just BORED. Somehow, Chris Cornell fits into AudioSlave. Weiland did better on "12 Bar Blues" than he does here. He and the DeLeo Brothers, the VERY underrated and Super-Uber-Talented-Creative Guitar/Bass team, did wonders with Weiland. Certain bands just have that individual, unique way that they project their music and stand out from the crowd. STP had that kind of magic. BTW, I always thought of them as a "Unique Hard Rock Band". I am a HUGE FAN of STP and (1988 - 1992) GUNS-N-ROSES....maybe I am just prejudice. Buy it cheap for yourself and decide. Hey, I kind of hate it but you may love it!BOYCOTT GUNS-N-ROSES AND CHINESE DEMOCRACY!!!!!!!!!!DO NOT BUY ANY FUTURE GUNS-N-ROSES CDS OR CONCERT TICKETS. I WANT TO SEE AXL HOMELESS!5) Very Sad Indeed [Rating: 2 out of 5]
I was really hyped up over this cd when it first came out having loved the Stone Temple Pilots. Believe me I gave this cd about 10 spins hoping it would grow on me but sadly it didnt. Its not horrible and its listenable but I dont want to own it nor would I want to hear it if I didnt have to . I sold it back a few weeks later. If you like GNR then stick to GNR , if you like STP then stick to STP. I would pass on this as I am sure these guys will die out soon and will not be remembered.
