1) Product Description
In the tradition of Stir of Echoes and Final Destination, Donnie Darko is an edgy, psychological thriller about a suburban teen coming face-to-face with his dark destiny. Jake Gyllenhaal leads a star filled cast (including Drew Barrymore, Noah Wyle, Jena Malone, Patrick Swayze and Mary McDonnell) as a delusional high school student visited by a demonic rabbit with eerie visions of the past and deadly predictions for the future. This "excitingly original" (Entertainment Weekly) nail-biter will keep you on the edge of your seat until the mind-bending climax.System Requirements:Starring Drew Barrymore, Noah Wyle, Patrick Swayze, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Mary McDonnell Directed by Richard Kelly Running time: 113 minutes Copyright Twentieth Century Fox 2003Format: DVD MOVIE2) Amazon.com
This unclassifiable but stunningly original film obliterates the walls between teen comedy, science fiction, family drama, horror, and cultural satire--and remains wildly entertaining throughout. Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky) stars as Donnie, a borderline-schizophrenic adolescent for whom there is no difference between the signs and wonders of reality (a plane crash that decimates his house) and hallucination (a man-sized, reptilian rabbit who talks to him). Obsessed with the science of time travel and acutely aware of the world around him, Donnie is isolated by his powers of analysis and the apocalyptic visions that no one else seems to share. The debut feature of writer-director Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko is a shattering, hypnotic work that sets its own terms and gambles--rightfully so, as it turns out--that a viewer will stay aboard for the full ride. --Tom Keogh

1) Weird, Compelling, Original--a Must See! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Your "helpful" votes are greatly appreciated. Thanks, and note that a short review is not necessarily a bad review if it leads you to a great movie. I've just noted the general theme.Don't be put off by the title "Donnie Darko." This weird time-travel movie, involving other dimensions, is great. There's a witch in it, but it's hard to describe, so as an older guy who often doesn't care for teenage movies, I'll just give it two thumbs up. I was surprised that I liked it so much. When so many movies are the same, it's nice to find something original, and I hope to see more such efforts. Here is another cult movie that I would also highly recommend. "Blue Velvet" (a weird murder mystery set in recent times).Blue Velvet (Special Edition)Still another couple movies that have been overlooked are:1. Lantana (Australian murder mystery set in modern times)2. Walkabout (also an Australian mystery adventure about two white children who join up with an Aborigine boy after their father commits suicide in the middle of the outback. A great adventure).LantanaWalkabout - Criterion Collection2) This Movie Isn't What You Think [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Qualifications: Is your mind open? Do you mind if you have to string some parts of the story together AFTER to movie for enjoyment to be complete? Are you okay with some disturbing imagery? Do you love 'artsy' movies like "American Beauty?"Yeah? Then buy this DVD. Don't even ask any questions. You don't need to know what this movie is about, and to try to describe it would be an impossible task. I'll just spew out a few words/phrases that come to mind when I think about this movie: great dialogue, interesting characters, psychology, time-travel, twisty-turvy plot that manages not to be convoluted, poignant, tragic, laugh out loud hilarious, true-to-life, epic elements. This movie, very simply, isn't what you think. It couldn't be. There is no way to understand this movie unless you experience it. It's a challenging movie that--even if you don't 'get it the first time (hell, I didn't)--always entertains and intrigues those who watch it.10/10 Classic.3) Originally remarkable [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Just be sure to stay the nuts away from the director's cut. We didn't ask for a Stanley Kubrick version of this movie, for Pete's sake. Stick with the original cut, mainly because it's better. But also because it's better. Plus, it's better. AND, it's better. So, there's about four reasons why. As far as the movie itself, the only thing I was confused by, is how Maggie and Jake Gyllllennnhaaaalll could play real-life fictional brother/sister in the movie, when they are real-life brother/sister OUTSIDE of the movie as well. It only makes sense to cast a fictional pair of real-life brother/sister to play fictional brother/sister in a real-life role, but not OUTSIDE of the fictional reality of the film. Plus, the fact that in the movie they are real-life brother/sister (yet still only fictionally, remember) kind of negates the fact that in reality they are only fictional brother/sister, and only in real-life reality do we see them as real-life fictional brother/sister. You know?4) Way Out [Rating: 3 out of 5]
Even though I know that this is generally regarded as a "classic", I'd have to say that the story line was just too screwy for me to enjoy.5) Excelente pelicula [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Es el tipo de pelicula que te gusta o no te gusta. No deja nada a medias.Yo la recomiendo bastante, esta subtitulada al español.
