Editorial Reviews (supplied by Amazon.com):

1) Amazon.com
The twisted cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is a statement of intent, while the cool jazz riffs from the band's trumpet player are part of what makes tracks like "Daria," "It's Coming Down," and "Frank Sinatra" so original. "The Distance" is a funked-up jam with a Chili Peppers chorus. --Jeff Bateman

1) I Love Cake!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Best Cake CD Ever!!! The Distance is a great song. But, there are numerous songs on this album that make it worth owning.

2) Cake Congealing   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Containing the band's two best known songs, "Fashion Nugget" is the Cake album most likely to be in your CD wish list (short of an inevitable anthology). After the interesting Motorcade of Generosity, the songwriting took a sharper turn here. The result was the novel hit "The Distance," which is one of those songs that reminds me of the Butthole Surfers' "Cinnamon." It's probably better than anything this band has a right to have ever created. After that, the deadly dry cover of "I Will Survive" is the kind of inside joke that actually has held its appeal in the 10 plus years since "Fashion Nugget" first hit the racks. The other cover, an English language rework of a Spanish hit "Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps," makes excellent use of Cake's bare bones ethic with the soloing trumpet riding on top of the melody. The final song, "Sad Songs and Waltzes," is probably the other really great piece of writing here...someone should beef up the arrangement and make a country weeper out of it.The rest of "Fashion Nugget" pretty much follows the formula. Jazzy skeletal playing with the trumpet filling in for lead guitars. In addition to "The Distance," the obsession with race cars pops up twice more on "Race Car Ya Ya's" and "Stickshifts and Safety Belts." If you dig Cake's kind of style, "Fashion Nugget" will be the slice that most satisfies.

3) Cake takes the cake with their second album   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
About the same time that Korn started to get popular, this group suddenly popped onto U.S. airwaves with the song "The Distance." I remember that single was probably the coolest song since Beck's first single "Loser." It was a song about lost love and racing. It had a thumping dance beat, squeeky synthesizer effects, horns and the smoothest bass line ever.Although no one would think that so many sound effects would make an incredible song, it worked. And the album was a hit. Even today, this album is an excellent piece of work. With this work, Cake transcended the genres of ska and funk rock, switching punk rock beats for hip-hop beats. In fact, they were even more successful than another group with the same hip-hop sensibility, Soul Coughing. The clean electric guitars may sound very simple, but Cake lays on some killer guitar solos, especially on their awesome cover of "I Will Survive." The horns also play a crucial role, adding a mariachi sound to the songs "Frank Sinatra" and "Daria." And yes, the main singer even mouths out a phat, obscene rap in the song "Nugget."Although kids might not be able to play this album without getting their mothers aggravated (the singer compares fuzzy dice to testicles in one song), this album is still one of the coolest things I have ever heard. The only group with the same nutty sense of humor today might be "LCD Soundsystem."

4) it puts a smile on my face   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This album really makes me happy. When I need to get a smile from myself or just about anybody else, I can just put on "I Will Survive." Truly, the entire album is big fun. Tons of great lyrics. Great horn. Groovy vocals. Just a really fun album.

5) Excellent   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I tell you, to fully appreciate Cake, you need a decent pair of headphones or speakers. Fashion Nugget has awesome bass, guitar lines, and decent sound and a lot going on. It's easy to miss a lot of the details that make Cake so good, they pack a huge hit at times, but if you miss it, Cake isn't as good as they really are.Enough of that, the music is great. There's country, jazz, rock, the band's sound is very unique. The horn is a great addition, as well as the drums, the many guitar lines, John actually sings, and the bass lines. Anybody who wants bass will like Fashion Nugget's basslines. The lyrics are pretty creative, but sometimes hard to figure out. Any creative lyrics takes a whlie to realize it's genius. No looking on Wikipedia or Arisfacts first, _______ cheaters!Okay, I realize I can't do much after other people explained it better, but I think it's good. This one is sort of a gamble, try downloading a few songs (please buy, support the artist, you __________). Don't rely on sound samples on this one much, beacuse the sound will sound so much like _______, and you need good sound to do Fashion Nugget justice. Don't even bother with them, although iTunes has good samples, more than Amazon (ps iTunes is free). I'm stuck with amazon, because my internet _______ _________ _________. ________ AOL. This is miles better than that bland waste Comfort Eagle. I might consider Prolonging The Magic (possibly the others).9.0/10
