Editorial Reviews (supplied by Amazon.com):

1) Amazon.com
Resembling at times a soft-sung Robert Plant, Buckley was an intuitive vocalist capable of dizzying arabesques and choir-boy sweetness. He is joined here by a tight band for 10 tracks highlighting his stylistic range--Pearl Jam bluesy on "Eternal Life," impossibly serene on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," art-school noisy on "So Real," Led Zep daring on "Mojo Pin." Unorthodox, this was the debut of '94. --Jeff Bateman

Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5

1) The Best   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Not much to say, but a sweet soulful voice coupled with great songs. A legend.

2) Not just Hallelujah   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
If you have heard Buckley's definitive version of Hallelujah (apologies to John Cale) and want to buy the cd based solely on that, then please do yourself (and us) a favor and either just buy the mp3 of that track or don't bother posting a flame of a review unless you actually know something about Buckley and his musical taste. That taste went across all types of genres and tempos and his first and only studio album had a loud alt-rock counterpoint that showed off the power of his amazing voice. He was much more than just a sweet voiced crooner with an uncanny ability to unearth little known classic songs. He could have been a great songwriter in his own right, given more time.So if you're with the Celine Dion crowd, or prefer Plant's stuff with Allison Krause to Zeppelin, then buy this cd anyway and program these tracks into your player--Lilac Wine-Hallelujah-Lover, You Should've Come Over-Corpus Christi Carol-And if you're feeling really adventurous- Grace. Then write a review and say the album is nothing but Hallelujah and a bunch of noise. If you're musical tastes are a bit more eclectic and you can equally enjoy Nirvana, Pavement, Nina Simone, Richard Thompson, Neil Young, Cat Power and the Beasties, then listen to the whole thing and see why "Grace" is a classic and his premature death was such a tragedy.

3) Changed my perception of Singer/Songwriter   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I first heard of Jeff Buckley via the ancient and defunct MuchMusic channel on Primestar satellite before it was Direct TV. The special being broadcast was Jeff Buckley in Chicago (available on DVD at Amazon as "Jeff Buckley-Live in Chicago", highly recommended!). When I saw that performance, I was completely blown away and decided that I must have a CD by this guy. I went out and found the Grace album, which has been in my disc changer ever since. This album has so many textures and redefines everything pertaining to the singer/songwriter genre. This is a must have for not only every Buckley fan, but anyone who loves great music and a unique, inimitable voice. High points are the songs So Real, Lover, You Should Have Come Over, and of course the grooving Last Goodbye. The beauty lies within his cover of Hallelujah, as well as Lilac Wine and the original and haunting Mojo Pin. Whether you buy this CD used or new doesn't really matter as long as you get it. This is a must have, so please buy.

4) Absolutely Unlistenable   [Rating: 1 out of 5]
Like many others, I had heard Mr. Buckley's rendition of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and was somewhat impressed. Thankfully, I didn't buy this CD but was able to sample a friends copy and found the remaining tracks downright awful. Obviously, this young man has a large and devoted following, but I would not recommend this CD to any of my musical friends.

5) Too Unfocused For Me   [Rating: 3 out of 5]
I've listened to this album for a while now and I'm ready to give my review...Overall, I really don't care for this album. The only standout is "Hallelujah," which is incredible. As another reviewer put it, the album as a whole is very unfocused. Most of the songs sound like he is singing them for the first time and hasn't settled on a solid vocal melody yet. Add that to the unique music in the songs and you get tracks that are really hard to latch-on to. I can't think of one song besides "Hallelujah" that I can hum the vocal melody to.The lyrics also ramble on a bit too much for my liking. I'm not saying you have to rhyme the last word of each line, but a lot of this stuff is like someone is just singing a story overtop of the music without any sense of direction or overall purpose. Some people like that, I don't.It seems to me that he was so focused on making something original that he consciously steered clear of ANYTHING that sounded mainstream. No catchy guitar licks, no real punchy choruses. Nothing.I know a lot of people like this album, and I can respect that because it is original sounding. That said, I'd recommend people just by the track "Hallelujah" off an online music service and save the rest of their cash.~Slick
