It may be too cynical to assume Hybrid Theory changed its name to Linkin Park in order to appear right next to Limp Bizkit in your local record bin. But rock-rap workouts like "One Step Closer" and "Papercut" do make Linkin Park a comfortable fit with Fred Durst and his ilk. Producer Don Gilmore (Pearl Jam, Lit, Eve 6) and twin vocal threats Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda serve up industrial-strength rap and rock melodicism with equal aplomb on this woulda-been-self-titled debut effort. "Points of Authority" aims to sound like Trent Reznor wanking it up with Lars and company, whereas guitarist Brad Delson's Edge-y harmonics help "In the End" and "Pushing Me Away" evoke a dark romanticism akin to A Perfect Circle. Curiously, the band gets by with no bass player, while sample-happy DJ Joseph Hahn's step into the spotlight on the instrumental "Cure for the Itch" suggests a potential for eclecticism that could help Linkin Park outlive its seemingly transient genre. --Bill Forman

1) Linkin Park Roxz [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This album is sooo good to me! I've heard every album that they've put out with the exception of the latest one, and I must say that I love each and every one of them!!! (Even the one that they did with Jay-Z.) But back to the point at hand. This album is so emotionally charged that it acually makes you get up involved with what you're listening to. That is why I love this album so much!2) hybrid theory linkin park [Rating: 5 out of 5]
very good cd, fits those who enjoy punk rock perfectly. liked it so much i've purchased other cd's by this artist recommend meterora as well also good and enjoyed very much3) Debut hybrid [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Linkin Parks' debut combines the chugga chugga style of fat chord riffing prevalent in post grunge hard rock to a semi industrial feel provided by the screaming of one of their two vocalists backed up by scratches (DJ style that is) provided by Joseph Hahn. The album is spearheaded by a number of hit singles and other very strong songs interspersed through the albums running time and that means the listener is regularly hearing great stuff, this album is a good example of how to pace a record. Starting off with a very typical Linkin song in Papercut which is hypnotic in it's semi industrial feel the album then segues into One Step Closer which is one of the best raucous numbers on the disc. Following accepted hard rock tradition the third track is a slower number but here the introspection has a different feel due to the muscular nature of the bands music overall on this release. And so the album continues, great hard rockers with slightly different feels to each other such as Crawling and Pushing Me Away laced with some more angst ridden self awareness like the downright depressing In The End. Production values are good, as this album could of felt somewhat claustrophobic without clarity in the mix and the lyrics are included in the booklet - as is the T-shirt ready band logo. Seriously, someone at the record company had some faith in this mob and this debut given how professional the project feels from top to bottom. A good hard rocker of an album if your in the mood for something different, that being scratches and dual vocalists being used to deliver the emotional content rather than the more traditional heavy metal band delivery.4) An LP Fan's review! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This album defined the soud of a generation. The combination of Nu Metal and old school Hip Hop reached new heights with Linkin Parks major label debut. This classic contains some of their best work to date and paved the way for many of the hardcore and metal bands from the current decade. LP had the power to reach many audiences, because of their effective fusion of rock & hip hop, and it's still today the point where many arguments about which genre is better end. Almost everyone likes Linkin Park and this albmum is the reason why.5) Nothing new, revolutionary.....or original [Rating: 2 out of 5]
As an 18 year old way back when this CD came out, I was pretty much into the current music scene as it was, so of course with all my extra cash I had from my job I bought this CD among a slew of other records as well.I look back at this CD now...and I really don't see anything special about it, and likewise I can't see how it has even reached the mainstream "metal" scene as far as I can tell. It DEFINITELY isn't metal, in fact I have no idea why they were even at an Ozzfest that I went to years back, it just did not fit at all. Now, many people would consider a convergance of hip hop and metal...a GOOD synergy here...to be strictly a mix of metal background and hip hop vocals (Hip hop based on the lyrics exclusively, and metal based on the background riffs/drums...you can't converge metal vocals and hip hop background...would be funny just to hear!). Linkin Park? Sure, you get your guitars, but they sound SYNTHETIC on this album. In fact, everything sounds like it is electronically done, which is all fine and dandy for a certain "sound", but calling this metal or any other form of rock is just plain wrong. Hip hop isn't about the beats, it's the flow of the lyrics...the flow is there, but the convergance is not...NOTHING HYBRID ABOUT IT!The first and absolute best synergy that can ever be found in this kind of convergance is Rage Against the Machine, and in all honesty Linkin Park does not even come close. So what is Linkin Park? The byproduct of a larger main stream hip hop scene, which, sad to say, started with Eminem's first release (sad because there was a lot of missed hip hop potential before that release, stuff that really could have sold much better). Hybrid Theory - 2/5
