Bagpipes, a song written as the soundtrack to a Michel Gondry music video, Patti Page's musical shadow, and Jack and Meg co-narrating a scavenger's rummages: It must be time for Icky Thump, the many-flavored riposte to 2006's Get Behind Me Satan. The duo starts big with the title track--Jack's fast-tumbling, falsetto-tinged lyrics jagging on hyper keyboard-sounding segues and Meg's pounding drums. They rarely shy from an idea, invoking acoustic Bob Dylan to frame "300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues," but interjecting a series of distortion-laden guitar paroxysms for good measure. The end of Icky, on "Effect and Cause," is where Jack's trademark vocal warble and spare, quick acoustic strums meet Meg's single-minded beats. Everywhere on Icky giant riffs leap and shout, with Flamenco horns and those eerie bagpipes and rhythmic shifts and Jack's impatient vocal kinetics, marking new territories even as the White Stripes again populate them with vintage ideas. --Andrew Bartlett2) Amazon.com
The White Stripes are back with the most bombastic album they've ever produced! While revealing the band's roots in American folk music, Icky Thump is an explosive, revolutionary assault that brings together garage rock, every blues style of the past 100 years, nouveau, and flamenco. This is truly a modern rock and roll masterpiece! 1) Not too old to ROCK! [Rating: 4 out of 5]
My stepdaughter actually turned me on to this group, she knew that I liked a lot of "CLASSIC" rock, and she thought this group had a sound like some of the older rock groups. She had me listen to Seven Nation Army, and when I heard it I'm thinking do you really think I'm supposed to like this? But the more I listend, the more I did become to like them. I guess I compare them to Led Zeppelin, because Led Zeppelin put out so much great music with just three people. Jack and Meg are also putting out a lot of great music with just two people. Led Zeppelin never considered themself a tour group, because a lot of their work had to be done in the studio. Jack and Meg do an excellent job touring. They sound great playing live. That said, I'm 50 plus and I love this entire album. I think there is a whole new market out there that the White Stripes would appeal to, so maybe some of you kids might have to force your parents to listen to them, especially if they like groups like Led Zeppelin.2) THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP where's the icky ? [Rating: 3 out of 5]
Icky ThumpNot what this old fart thought could win a grammy, if you like THUMP than this is your thang.....white boy BOOM BOOM BOOM, maybe it will grow on me, it really isn't icky, I just thought that a grammy winning CD would be more musical, atleast I own the grammy winning Willie Nelson CD among other great pieces of MUSIC, I am an AUDIOPHILE and this just makes my subwoofer shake rattle and BOOM, and when I go down the street in my hood all the home boys are check'n out my ride, they can FEEL me comin....3) Get Behind Me Icky! [Rating: 2 out of 5]
I was a huge fan of "Elephant" and "Get Behind Me Satan." I have constantly defended these albums against those who criticize the White Stripes. But this album left me feeling icky. The first three songs were really good (especially "You Don't Know What Love Is..."). But after hearing those three songs, I was expecting even better songs to come. Unfortunately, they did not. Jack's signature guitar licks are great and his voice is awesome and Meg's constant drum pounding is...well, it is what it is. However, the songs were mostly just odd with lyrics that felt freestyled and unimaginative. The music is very, very bluesy but it doesn't really go anywhere. This is nowhere near The Stripes best material. If they made a best of album, only about 2 songs on here should be included. Tracks six through nine were just terrible and needed to push the "next" button on. I am so disappointed, but will not give up on the Stripes. There is always next time.4) Simply put . . . [Rating: 5 out of 5]
. . . this is their best, most creative, most off-the-hook album yet! And that's really saying something, because all their albums are really good. Ignore the haters, they're just jealous!5) Very good album from The White Stripes. [Rating: 4 out of 5]
The White Stripes latest album was quite good, some of the songs were experimental just like in Get Behind Me Satan so if you liked that album then your going to love this. It does take some time to get used to this sound but both Meg and Jack White are both talented and they do come up with some great rock songs and my favorite so far was Little Cream Soda with its Led Zepplin like riffs and nice high strung guitar parts another favorite would be the title song Icky Thump (I'm not sure what that means but the song was awesome) and Rag and bone which is a great blues rock song even though the lyrics were a bit corny, Jack's song writing definitely needs some improvement. Jack also experiments with other instruments like a bagpipe on Prickly Thorn, I'm not sure how to describe this song but its sort of like Scottish folk mixed with blues and it was quite catchy and thats what I usually like about this group cause they know how to make some catchy and unique music I also liked the slow acoustic and rock song A Martyr for my love for you and You don't know what love is which is the second single that was released so overall this album wasn't so bad there were probably only two songs which I didn't like but this album was pretty damn impressive, it has a very nice eclectic mix to it I'm really looking forward to their next release. Anyway this album is yet another great release from The White Stripes even though its not my favorite and I didn't like the cover song Conquest with its Mariachi horn which I find irritating and I think that The White Stripes are capable of making better albums like Elephant but still I always manage to enjoy their stuff, I highly recommend this album especially if you like some offbeat but great modern rock music.
