1) Amazon.com essential recording
Riff rock had been what Jimmy Page's former band, the Yardbirds, were all about, and on Led Zeppelin's second album, released, like its predecessor, in 1969, the inventive guitarist demonstrated that he'd indeed learned his lessons well. Witness "Whole Lotta Love," a woozy epic based on one simple, head-banging-friendly guitar riff. Or the mock-dramatic "Heartbreaker," propelled by far more intricate but similarly effective note squashing. Between Page's sonic wizardry, John Bonham beating his drums into submission ("Moby Dick"), and the juice running down Robert Plant's leg ("The Lemon Song"), Led Zeppelin here just about succeeded in raising rock & roll excess to an art form. --Billy Altman

2) Amazon.com
Led Zeppelin II is an album of Jimmy Page riffs so huge, and John Paul Jones/John Bonham rhythms so deep, that the heavy metal genre this classic helped create has tried for decades to catch up, mostly without success. And no wonder: since II catches the band before they'd headed too far into their ridiculous medieval fancies, this might be as good as Zep would ever be. Regardless, the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love," a Top 5 hit, and "Bring It on Home" are very nearly as fierce and twisted as British white blues would ever get. --David Cantwell

1) Why wouldn't you....   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
...love or listen to Led Zeppelin 1-4, if you like Rock music? This album is the Rosetta Stone of rock. I don't know that I can "review" Led Zeppelin II. It's like doing a book review of the Bible.I give it 5 stars, what the hay.

2) Zep's Best?   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
How ballsy is this album, to begin with a track that immediately goes beyond any normal boundaries of rock n' roll? Common (corporate) sense would seem to dictate starting the album off with an accessible track, that will pull in new listeners, but "Whole Lotta Love" goes into an extended atmospheric, percussion driven breakdown, before returning to form. This leads in to the dualistic "What Is and What Should Never Be," with its soft verses and poweful, driving chorus. I'd call it an album highlight...but what isn't a highlight on an album as good as this? A heavy blues follows, in "The Lemon Song," which demonstrates Zep's ability to make even standard blues forms sound new and refreshing by plugging in and playing with a thick sound, over which Robert Plant's vocals sound soulful, and to accompany it all with a great Jimmy Page solo. The combination of "Heartbreaker" and "Living Loving Maid" is one of the few song tandems that is never heard in separate parts, along with Queen's "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions," which are always played back-to-back, off of 1977's News of the World. Whether the two songs, one of which perfectly flows into the other, were intended to play as one is something I don't know with any certainty, but "Heartbreaker" does play perfectly into the intro of the following track.I could easily write about every track on this album. It's stellar throughout, and is, in my opinion, probably the best Zeppelin album, though it doesn't have as many "famous" songs as Led Zeppelin [IV] or show as much range in style as Physical Graffiti. But it's great from front to back, and usually my first choice when I'm needing a Zep fix.

3) Doesn't get any better.   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Decided to start a new Christmas Tradition this year. Give each of my children, (21 & 23 yrs) two of my all time favorite Classic Rock CD's. Every Christmas. It's kind of fun...figuring out which to give. This year I gave this CD (Led Zeppelin II) and The Who, "Who's Next". I was pleasantly surprised, how much they thought it was a excellent idea. Coming from the "queen of hip hop" and my son "very, very, very hard rock fan, they both seem to be broadening their musical tastes. Quoting my hip hop daughter.....Zeppelin Rocks Dad!!! Duhhh!!!

4) The top rock album of the 20th Century!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
There! I've said it!I can think of no other single compilation of music that defines Classic Rock moreso than this album/CD. It's spectacular, brilliant.... phenomenal.Every cut on this album is a killer. They're all great, no stinkers, no kidding. When this one came out, we were all just bowled over. The most popular format in those days was 8-track (yikes!) because it made us MOBILE. I know that I had to buy three or four copies because the players were always eating tapes. BUT, you could sit out on the hilltop and commune with your honey, sip Ripple Wine, smoke..... whatever, and let the damn thing run all night long, non-stop!Perhaps that's the big deal for me, that is, the nostalgia. But don't be steered off by that. This really IS a great rock album to many ears other than my own.In the end, while I see "Led Zeppelin II" as the greatest rock album of all time, I personally like Led Zeppelin III better. It's NOT as brilliantly conceived but I just happen to like the songs a little better.Buy this CD. If you've not heard it, (like, if you've been on Venus for 40 years), then you're in for an astonishing treat. And I want to draw your attention to a big bonus if you like Led Zeppelin II. You'll want to hear/acquire this one -- it's unbelieveable!Live at the GreekGit 'em!!!

5) An essential album   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Led Zeppelin II, a real classic rock album, a must have.Every song is a jewel. Whole llota love, What is and what should never be, Thank you (my favorite one), Heartbreakder, Living Loving Maid.If you like classic rock of the 70's and you don't have this one, you are missing an important part of history, go and get it !
