To celebrate 10 years as the world's most popular musical, the cast of Les Misérables threw a phenomenal birthday party at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1995. A decade after Trevor Nunn directed its premiere at the Barbican Centre, and the subsequent move into what became a permanent home at the West End Palace Theatre, producer Cameron Macintosh felt the time had come for a little outing for "the miserables." Conductor David Charles Abell, having climbed out of the cluttered Palace pit, for one glorious night has the entire Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at his disposal and there are appearances from over 150 singers--birthday celebs from Les Mis stagings worldwide--who flocked to the grandiose venue. Hosts for the night are the 1995 London cast: Colm Wilkinson's Valjean has power and beauty in "Who Am I?" and "Bring Him Home," and Michael Ball is a charming Marius. Miss Saigon herself, Lea Salonga, gets the crowd-pleasing favorite "On My Own." The Albert Hall sounds filled to the brim with an appreciative audience that contributes to the festive atmosphere. The result is a real treat for fans and lovers of Boubil and Schönberg's greatest musical--this double CD is an obligatory item in every collection of Les Mis memorabilia. --Yngvil V.G.

1) Wow [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is awesome. I own this on VHS (will be going DVD soon) and have been meaning to get this forever. Agreeing with other reviewers, the vocalists are AWESOME! I've not heard any of the other recordings, so I cannot comment as to how it compares to them. I can't see any being better than this, but there is a small chance I could be wrong. But, if you own the DVD (or VHS for that matter) three words: PICK THIS UP!2) Les Miserables CD [Rating: 5 out of 5]
A truly magnificent recording of "Les Miserables" from the Albert Hall in London, UK, I would recommend this CD to anybody. This live recording deserves a place in everybodys library.John Winter3) when you can't get enough of a good thing [Rating: 5 out of 5]
even though this recording does not have my favorite Javier (Chuck Wagner) Phillip Quast is good and the music and the rest of the cast is magic as always. I never get tired of playing it.4) Pure Perfection [Rating: 5 out of 5]
If you are to buy one Les Miserables album, this is the one to have. With a cast that includes Phillip Quast, Colm Wilkinson, Ruthie Henshall, Michael Ball, Judy Kuhn, and Lea Salonga, it can do no wrong. Each of the actors is absolutely perfect for the role-exactly as I pictured them while reading the novel-EXCEPT Lea Salonga, who, ironically, gives the best performance of the whole cast. I will admit that those who have complained that Lea is not suited for Eponine are correct: She is neither ugly nor does she have a terrible voice. The key word here is terrible. Yes, Eponine should not sound pretty. However, even I, a very strong novel purist, will say that I would rather have Lea Salonga bring tears to my eyes as Eponine than some other girl make me wince every time she opens her mouth for a song (Here, I refer to the Complete Symphonic Recording. Perfect Eponine, very painful to hear). All I can say is get it. It is worth every penny.5) Astonishing [Rating: 5 out of 5]
so one day i'm puttering around amazon since im bored and it's prolly about 3 in the morning. i randomly type in lea salonga and up pops this recording of Les Miserables. i had just purchased miss saigon and thought, hmm well that's cool. i started looking at this recording and saw that lea salonga and michael ball were both here. i loved them both in miss saigon and aspects of love respectively. when i saw that judy kuhn was also here i couldn't press "add to cart" fast enough.to title this as the dream cast is a prtty lofty status. but this recording lives up brilliantly. this cast is well, a dream cast. this is the only recording of les mis that i own or have ever heard. i don't feel there's any point in looking for any other. with most musicals i usually buy a couple of cast recordings, but this one is spectacular.the music is rich and brilliant. the royal philharmonic orchestra sounds rich and vibrant. the recurring themes throughout the musical are all beautiful and moving. the more rousing numbers such as "one day more" and "do you hear the people sing" are both great too. the characters are all rich and vibrant. as a listener you can feel for them in a way that is pretty impressive for a recording.and then there's that dream cast. there trully is no other way to catagorize them. they ALL bring emotion to their songs and make for a moving musical.COLM WILKINSON - wilkinson's version of valjean is so impressive. he adds layers and emotion and his voice sounds weathered and full of the pain of years in prison. his pivitol performance really sets the bar for the rest of the cast. when he really belts in towards the end of valjean's soliloquy, its hard not to get goosebumps.PHILIP QUAST - phillip quast as javert is also impressive. his ability to play the cold persuer of javier at first is great, but his emotional delivery in the second act shows great range and abilityMICHAEL BALL - i love michael ball's voice anyways but his versiion of marius is great. his performance is moving like all of his. "empty chairs at empty tables" is particularly moving. and when he and lea salonga perform on "a little fall of rain" it's pretty hard to keep a dry eye.LEA SALONGA - lea salonga is my all-time favorite vocalist. the beauty and emotion of her voice is astounding. she's the reason why i bought this cd and she is stunning here. some have complained that her injection of bitterness in "on my own" is a poor delivery. i couldn't disagree more. her ability to infuse the hope that marius will love her and the bitter realization that he never will makes "on my own" a brilliant anthem of unrequieted love that only those who know it can understand. when she delivers "a little fall of rain" the irony that she finally gets what she has yearned for is moving to the point of tears.the rest of the cast shines as well. some have complained about judy kuhn, but i love her voice as well and her interpretation of cosette is great. ruthie henshall as fantine is stunning. "i dreamed a dream" is beautiful and her emotion is second only to salonga. alun armstrong and jenny galloway are both hilareous and come close to stealing the show.overall, this is a beautiful version of a brilliant show. and is the only one that i need to appreciate the endearing greatness of this show. the cast all shines. there is no weak link. everyone dazzles no matter how small their part is. this is an absolute MUST own for any musical fan at all. you won't regret it
