Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. Backed by her quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist John Pisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this program of standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here with You," Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care," and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat "King" Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" (a studio track from a film called The Guru), with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. This collection only hints at what Diana Krall has to offer in the future.--Eugene Holley Jr.

1) "Let Me See What Spring Is Like On Jupiter And Mars"   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This CD, "Live In Paris," produced by Tommy LiPuma for Verve Records is one of my favorite Diana Krall CDs. It won the most-coveted award for "Best Jazz Vocal Album" at the 2002 Grammy Awards. The first 11 tracks were recorded live at the Paris Olympia in 2001 and the last track "Just The Way You Are," was recorded in New York City. What made this live recording so special to me is the inclusion of an all-time favorite song penned by Bart Howard, "Fly Me To The Moon." Diana Krall gives it a gorgeous treatment that is best possible for a live recording with the support of Anthony Wilson on guitar, John Clayton on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums. "Fly me to the moonAnd let me play among the starsLet me see what Spring is likeOn Jupiter and MarsIn other words, hold my handIn other words, Darling kiss meFill my heart with songAnd let me sing forevermore." Most of her hit songs from various albums are performed in the liveliest settings. You'll surely appreciate and enjoy "The Look of Love," "'S Wonderful," "East of the Sun (And West of the Moon") and Billy Joel's greatest song "Just The Way You Are," a song I love when it was a number one hit . . . many moons ago? And not to mention a tear-jerker of all-time, "Maybe You'll Be There," the song responsible for the expressive eyes that cried a river, and the song that produced an ocean of tears. Two of my highlights, "Let's Fall In Love" and "I've Got You Under My Skin" features Alan Broadbent as music director/conductor with Orchestre Symphonique European. This CD, which Diana Krall dedicates to her mother, is a testament that she is equally good at live recording with her enigmatic stage presence and a great rapport with live audience. Kudos to all her fine musicians who helped make this one of the most outstanding jazz live recordings. This is a fabulous listen and I wholeheartedly recommend it!

2) What can I say? 'S 'Wonderful!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Last week I received this CD as a gift. I think I finally know why I like Ms. Krall so much. Besides the given that Ms. Krall is a wonderful Jazz pianist, and that she is very attractive, what I think is her real talent, is that she delivers on the emotion of a song so well that I feel that as she is singing, it is meant just for me, with a touch of wit just below the surface, like you are sharing a private joke. I don't know if that was articulated well enough to make sense, but there you go.As to this CD, it is wonderful! Case closed!

3) Jaded Listener   [Rating: 3 out of 5]
I can't say I've ever been blown away by Diana, but this album turned me off somewhat. Like many female singers of note - Jennifer Warnes, for instance - Diana's voice can be too strong, and in too many places here she doesn't restrain it. Perhaps she's a better jazz pianist than jazz singer. I do enjoy the instrumental portions of this album.

4) Diana Krall from Paris   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This CD is sensational!!!! I have most of the tracks on other CDs of hers, but this is the very best. She sings with more conviction and confidence. Her vocals are so much 'fuller'than the orginals. Her instrumentals have more detail ..... sound is terrific. It is a wonderful tape to own if you know her music or not! I highly recommend it and am purchasing it for close friends who enjoy her talent and the soft jazz sound!!

5) Diana Krall in Top Form, Classic   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Dear John: Letters From a Fan in New York City: An Interactive Book Diana Krall, you got me through my ups and downs with style. This is her best CD, in my opinion. I just recently saw her live in concert, and most of the songs (but not all) were in the concert. This is quintessential Diana Krall. A must-have CD for all her fans. Trust me.
