Editorial Reviews (supplied by Amazon.com):

1) Amazon.com essential recording
The last Nirvana collection recorded before the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, Unplugged caught many by surprise with its stripped down, neo-acoustic offerings with a bridled fury. When Cobain sings, "I swear I don't have a gun, I don't have a gun" with clenched teeth (instead of an open howl) and when the haunting strains of "About a Girl"--from their earliest LP--chills even with quieted guitars, you discover a new appreciation for the nuances of one of the greatest bands of recent times. Highlights include covers of three Meat Puppets tracks (featuring special guests Curt and Kris Kirkwood of that influential "college rock" band), the weepy cello on the Vaselines' "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam," and their cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." --Lorry Fleming

1) Perfection   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is my favorite Nirvana record. I wanted to review it a long time ago, but reading the other reviews on here, I feel that others have expressed very eloquently, exactly how I feel about Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged in New York". This record has proven to be timeless, as whenever I listen to it after not hearing it for a while, it never loses it's beauty or substance. The Unplugged DVD is amazing as well, but sometimes I think I prefer the CD version, since then you can concentrate solely on the sound of Kurt Cobain's voice, which breaks and cracks at almost every turn. He's often out of breath and out of tune, but that's the beauty of this live performance; it's so honest and full of emotion, it just draws you in. Of the 14 songs, 6 are covers, one of which is "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?".This is the last song on the Unplugged and I can't think of a better and more powerful way to close the concert.

2) spectacular   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is the album that did it for me... I'm the right age to have been a Nirvana fan from the start, but I wasn't. To me they were just another headbanger act even up to the moment that Kurt died. But once I heard this album, I knew what I'd been missing.

3) One of the Best Cds   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I love Nirvana, this is one of the best cds they have, not to mention its a live Concert... MTV Umplugged...

4) very revealing to say the least   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Though I have only owned this cd for the past year, I kept hearing the accolades for it over the past dozen years, and yet brushed them off as "jaded Nirvana fans still recovering from the loss of Kurt Cobain". The thought of a post-punk band hashing out their tunes with acoustic instruments seemed very unappealing, and seemed like just a ploy to make more money. I suppose my attitude about Nirvana changed when I actually bought my first Nirvana recording "Nevermind", and followed that up with "In Utero". "Nevermind" convinced me that Cobain, Novoselic, and Grohl were accomplished musicians who had honed their craft over the years, and that Cobain had a special gift for writing strange but compelling lyrics. "In Utero" taught me that Nirvana was just as if not more concerned with the art of music making as they were in selling records. At the very least, they had earned my trust to buy at least one more recording: "Unplugged in NY".When I first heard "Unplugged in NY", I immediately understood that the "hype" I had been hearing for so long was actually well-deserved. It was literally the soundtrack of my life for over a two-month period. The recording works for many reasons. First and foremost, all of the Nirvana songs on this recording are done in a very revealing way that brings out the strength of the actual songwriting. Add to this the great cover songs (David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold World", the Vasolines's "Jesus Doesn't Want Me For a Sunbeam" and three excellent songs from the Meat Puppets) and the superb additional musician support (Pat Smear guitar, Lori Goldston cello, The Kirkwood Brothers guitar) to accompany the already capable Nirvana trio, and one has quite a memorable recording. The interested listener may also want to check out Neil Young's "After The Gold Rush" and The Band's self-titled recording, as well as their "Basement Tapes" recording with Bob Dylan. Mentioning Kurt Cobain in the same breath as Neil Young and Bob Dylan IMO seems quite appropriate.

5) Good old Nirvana   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I had this on cassette years ago, and my son listened to it when he was young. He recently asked for it as a gift, and I copied it for myself. Hadn't really listened to it much before, but it's great stuff! Being a Washingtonian, it makes me proud of the stuff that's come out of this area!
