Editorial Reviews (supplied by Amazon.com):

1) Amazon.com essential recording
Emotionally over-the-top pop extravaganzas like the string-swelling "Tonight Tonight," the Metallica-influenced alternative rock of "Zero," the techno via new wave of "1979"--the 28 songs on this swell two-disc album are as eclectic as their themes are epic and ambitious. Billy Corgan's thin whine isn't much of an instrument, but he makes the most of it by writing smart songs that take emotional chances that more-typical alt rockers would deem uncool. Pessimistic and feeling trapped but still wanting to believe in love, in a future, in something--this is the sound of Gen X at the millennium, with all the self-indulgence and power that would suggest. --David Cantwell

1) START HERE to become a Pumkins fan   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
The Smashing Pumpkins just came out with a greatest hits...just like every other band a decade after they have ceased to be. But to those new to the Smashing Pumkins I recommed they start here. This is a double disk album that features a nice mix of what the band was about. It features Radio friendly songs like 1979.Thumping Metalistic songs like Zero and Bullet with butterfly wings. And the Artistic original songs like X.Y.U and BodiesEven a couple of slow songs (well as slow as the Pumpkins get anyway) like Thirty Three and Tonight Tonight.Or maybe you will become a fan of the seriously trippy songs like Porcelina or Thru the eyes of ruby. What every part or multipe parts you like this is the CD to get you started. If you enjoy this CD then go get (used if you can find them) Siamese Dream, Pisces iscariot, Adore and so on.But this cd is definatly the crowning highpoint of their era.

2) why cant corgan make stuff like this anymore? he's insane, thats why   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Billy Corgan is interesting to me, he seems like a musician well developed and innovative in his own sub genre of harder rock. And yet for some reason anything released by Smashing Pumpkins after this album was average, if that at best. Sad to say, this is the last classic Smashing Pumpkins album. Whether they tried to develop their sound with Nuevo-drum machines/ sounds in Adore or loud and noisy industrial sounds of MACHINA/The Machines of God, nothing has worked for them, and their latest album Zeitgeist is the pinnacle of crap. Stupid, pointless and thus ruining the Smashing Pumpkins name forever. He may as well have put this album under the Zwan title, it was so unworthy of SP recognition. All things aside, this review is about Mellon Collie. I remember getting this album and thinking that it was insane that SP would release a double CD, my first introduction to the band was through Siamese Dream, which I followed closely to with Gish and Pisces Iscariotand never chose to pay much attention to them, until I gave this album a listen. And now SP are one of my favourite bands of all time.Raw, Gentle, Hard, Soft, all within the same album. I remember as a teenager listening to this how I would just have both CD's on rotation with Soundgarden's Superunknown. And listen to it all night. All the time. I used to only appreciate the first CD, but at the same time, learnt to appreciate the second CD as the opposite, but complimenting side to this album. I don't think there are that many albums I could listen to over and over, but this has to be one of them. Without a doubt. I will make my kids listen to this double CD one day as an example of the crazy stuff their dad listened to in their day, only to dream that they may feel a little bit of what I did when I first listened to this album.Never again will their be an album like this, I believe if there is a point you want to hail as Smashing Pumpkins best work, you don't need to look further then this. It's a shame that despite all things, billy corgan will not look to reconciling with James Iha and D'arcy.

3) Best Deal in Town   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
With the album download price of less than 9 dollars, this is an amazing buy with the amount of content you are getting.

4) Still loved... years later   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I was in high school when this album came out, and honestly wanted it just because everyone else did. My parents got it for me and I swear it never left my CD player (except to change to the other disc) my entire high school career. I was never a Smashing Pumpkins fan until hearing this album, but it was love at first listen. Mellon Collie is unique as it doesn't all sound the same, and there are songs that will bring tears to my eyes. I've long since worn out the discs, but now have it downloaded onto my iPod, and "Tonight, Tonight" will be the first song that my fiance and I dance to as husband and wife at our wedding next year.

5) Smashing Pumpkins review   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is one of The Smashing Pumpkins better albums with two CDs each geared towards a different time of the day. I truely enjoy both discs. The Songs seem to slowly head towards the other album as it goes. For example by the time you get to 'To Forgive' on the Dawn to Dusk album your starting to get a more end of day feel. Then 'In the Arms of Sleep' Gives you a in the night feel. Themed albums :)
