San Diego is not exactly known as a hotbed of contemporary bluegrass music, but then again, Nickel Creek are a far cry from most bluegrass bands you've ever heard. On their Alison Krauss-produced debut, they serve up a lilting, ethereal fusion of bluegrass, Celtic, modern folk, and even classical influences, offering exquisite harmonies that would be more at home at a Crosby, Stills & Nash tribute than at a musical salute to the late Bill Monroe. Yet it makes for delightful listening, all the same. The three principals (Sara Watkins on fiddle and vocals; her brother Sean Watkins on guitar, mandolin, and vocals; and Chris Thile on mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, and vocals) are either barely out of their teens or still in them. Individually and as a band, they've already won a slew of awards and notoriety on their respective instruments. The three prodigies (joined by Thile's dad, Scott, on bass) really strut their eclectic hot licks on a few soaring, skittering instrumentals, but even more impressive are Nickel Creek's graceful, heartfelt harmonies on the many lovely ballads. Hot licks, when you get right down to it, are a dime a dozen; this sort of pluperfect tunefulness is a much rarer thing. --Bob Allen

After my introduction to this band, I learned of a concert 300 miles away. I had to witness these souls in person. Absolutely a fantastic addition to your music collection.

this album is the best album by one of the best bands out there. yes its bluegrass based, but the music in here is so good that bluegrass lovers and haters can both enjoy it if they would just get over the absolutes. talent and musical genius are all over this album.thile is the best young mandolinists out there sean not only knows how to play guitar, but fills in so well that you hardly realize he's there, until you really listen, and then he's all over the record. and sara. the lord has blessed her hands on the fiddle and her melodies and harmonies ring loud. who needs 5 people in a band. forget two electric guitars and a bass drums a singer and a DJ.. lets get on to the real stuff. mandolin, fiddle, and guitar. simplicity at its finest, composed into complex rhythms and melodies. amazing alibum.

This may be one of my all time favorite albums of all times. It is that good to me. Granted it is not classic bluegrass, which I love too, but it takes bluegrass to a new level. Don't try to compare it just to bluegrass. Take it for what it is. Chris Thile is probably the most amazing mandolin player on the planet and the other two musicians are amazing talents as well. The definately have created their own sound with this CD.

WOW!!! I have been trying to find out for a long time who sang this song that I heard once from a friend. It was the most beautiful song I had heard at that time in my life. It was "When You COme Back Down". Once I had found out it was this band called Nickel Creek, I just had to find it and buy it. If any of the songs on this CD sound as good as this song, it has to be a really great buy.

5) The ups and downs of youth   [Rating: 3 out of 5]
After really enjoying Why Should the Fire Die, I decided to get to know Nickel Creek from their start. This album features the ups and downs of their youth at the time - hopeful, clean energy, but at times too simplistic and lacking the confidence they later developed. I consider the instrumentals to be the main treat here.
