Essentially a greatest-hits collection with one previously unreleased song, "You Know You're Right," and producer Scott Litt's 1994 remix of "Pennyroyal Tea," Nirvana the album is nevertheless a welcome addition to the band's canon. Crisp, elegant liner notes by Rolling Stone writer David Fricke put us squarely in Kurt Cobain's mindset as he entered a Seattle studio in January 1994--a full two days later than expected--to record what would be his final session with Nirvana. The resulting "You Know You're Right" locates Cobain at the apogee of his disenfranchisement with tongue nevertheless planted firmly in cheek. Bawdy, raucous, and venomous, "You Know You're Right" could have been lifted from Nevermind. A mix of tracks from that album ("Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Come as You Are," "Lithium," and "In Bloom") sits opposite stuff from early EPs and the Bleach disc ("About a Girl," "Been a Son," and "Sliver"), plus two from the MTV Unplugged sessions and several more from In Utero. Not the Nirvana treasure chest we hoped for, but solid nonetheless. --Kim Hughes2) Album Description

1) Simply Named Nirvana [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I was so happy to purchase Nirvana's self-titled Greatest Hits album. What can you say about this awesome band that hasn't already been said? From the time period of 1989 to 1994, Nirvana were on top of the world. Nirvana lead the grunge movement of the early 90's that included bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains. Nirvana's impact on music cannot be denied. Despite the tragic suicide death of Kurt Cobain, their music still lives on to this day. The trio that also includes Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl & Krist Novaselic had so many great songs. Classics like "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Come As You Are", "In Bloom", "All Apologies", "About A Girl", "Lithium" and "Rape Me" can all be found on this Greatest Hits collection. I definitely recommend this purchase for any rock music fan that wants to get caught up on Nirvana.2) Best Nirvana Album [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Forget what the haters say. This is better than "Nevermind", "Bleach", and "In Utero", It's got only the best singles and is very worthy of being called a greatest hits compilation.BUY THIS!!!3) The Best [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is the best Nirvana cd to own. Every single song on it is of course great, and I can never get enough of this cd. Its perfect.4) A very good Nirvana retrospective [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Looking at the tracklist on the back of the CD, it gives the impression that all that is on the disc is the "new" song, "You Know You're Right," and remastered tracks taken from the band's various albums. It turns out that, in this case, appearances are deceiving. The first track on the disc is "You Know You're Right," the last song Nirvana recorded together before Kurt Cobain's suicide in April 1994. I really like this song, and it shows that Kurt still had some mileage left in him as a songwriter, but that he cut himself off. Whenever I hear it, it makes me think about "what could have been."The verison of "About a Girl" that appears on this disc is the original version from the band's fist album, Bleach (rather than the version from MTV Unplugged in New York). When I saw that "Been a Son" was on the disc, I assumed it would be the version that appeared on Incesticide. It turns out it's actually the version from the Blew EP (which is a different recording of the song and is a version that was hard to come by before the release of this CD).Another surprise was "Pennyroyal Tea." Instead of using the In Utero version, a previously unreleased single mix of the song is included. According to the liner notes, Scott Litt did this mix for a 1994 release, but the release of "Pennyroyal Tea" was scrapped after Kurt's suicide, because Geffen decided to cease promoting In Utero. It's unfortunate that Geffen didn't play up the fact that the versions of "Been a Son" and "Pennyroyal Tea" were alternate versions. I would definitely recommend this CD to a Nirvana collector who wants these alternate versions and don't want to track down obscure releases in order to get them. I would also recommend this disc to someone who isn't as familiar with Nirvana, because I feel this album would make a good starting point for someone to become familiar with the band's material.5) Not worth it [Rating: 3 out of 5]
If your like me, and own all of the released Nirvana albums, this is not worth the buy. I think they left out alot of other great songs. Buy the 3 CD's + 1 DVD Nirvana Box Set instead.
