If its debut album 15 years ago made Pearl Jam apprehensive with success, the Seattle quintet better buckle in for a return to eminence. On its eighth studio release--and first since 2002--the band socks away the adventurous experimentation that dogged some of its most recent records to investigate a post-September 11, war-ravaged world overflowing with urgency and significance. "It's the same everyday in a hell manmade/What can be saved, and who will be left to hold her?" lead singer Eddie Vedder wonders in "World Wide Suicide," one of several contemptuous rants on the Bush administration. Yet the album's spark is more than political. Songs like "Life Wasted," "Comatose" and "Big Wave" embrace the garage-rock past, as guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard play off each other with the primal lucidity of a decade ago and drummer Matt Cameron, one of rock's best, adds raw backing vocals to Vedder's polished craft. But Pearl Jam also turns up some of its most harmonious works since "Daughter," including "Marker in the Sand," with its radio-ready chorus, the tuneful "Parachutes" paced by Gossard's divine strumming, and the burning narrative and Urge Overkill punch of "Umemployable." Finally Vedder pleads for a lover's return in "Come Back," a keyboard-soaked love song complete with a chilling Gossard solo. It's got a soulfulness that begs for Sam Cooke to sing it and an originality that shows that a vibrant and cocksure Pearl Jam is back in town--and ready to retake the world. --Scott HolterRecommended Pearl JamrearviewmirrorRiot ActLive at Benaroya HallLive on Two LegsVitalogyLive at the Garden (DVD)

1) Pearl jam we all loved   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
It's a typical introspective album. Gone are days of Ten and Vs. Simply because everything changed... the music scene, the world... for both the bad and (somewhat) good. This is not the album that will instantly grab you (some tunes will), but it's a grower... a heavy grower. Brilliant tunes, the quality music that was almost forgotten in this hip-pop junk. But not entirely, thanks to PJ!!!This is one of their best and certainly one of their classics!

2) Great stuff   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Overall a great album, worth every cent I payedQuick overview of each song (leaving out Wasted Reprise)1. Life Wasted - Very much sounds like it could be cut from the middle of Vs, a very up-tempo song with an extremely catchy guitar line.2. World Wide Suicide - Good political rock song, you've probably heard it already and have an opinion on it.3. Comatose - Sounds like something of the cut of Spin the Black Circle, very short, very intense, very gratifying.4. Severed Hand - Maybe the best song on the CD. Will probably be the Given to Fly of this CD, may not be the mega radio hit, but a fan favorite.5. Marker in the Sand - Best refrain they have in the CD, very good song.6. Parachutes - Like the guitar, hate the song, doesn't do it for me.7.Unemployable - Really liked it when I first heard it, haven't fallen for it since. Good song, but gets lost around the significantly better ones earlier.8. Big Wave - Very cool surfy song.9. Gone - Great deep song, probably their best since Black.10. Army Reserve - A song that keeps growing on me, the guitar is almost hynotic, obviously another anti-war song11. Comeback - My personal favorite song on the CD, nice song, awesome solo.12. Inside Job - To be honest, I haven't really listened enough to it to pass judgment. If you like Pearl Jam, you'll like this CD.

3) Underrated album   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Over the hill? Au contraire. Pearl Jam completes their comeback, effectively proving that Riot Act was no fluke. They're really back, and they really mean business. For the most part, anyway: I find nothing attractive about the acoustic pop of "Parachutes", and not all of the straightforward rockers leave as big of an impact as the best ones do (compare "Life Wasted", "World Wide Suicide" or "Marker in the Sand" to "Big Wave" and "Unemployable" - of course, the former three stand out more). One thing's for sure, though: Pearl Jam is not dead. Not quite as strong as they were on Ten, but they're still alive, still able to churn out killer rockers (the politically themed "World Wide Suicide" and "Army Reserve"; "Life Wasted"; the dynamic shifting "Marker in the Sand"), and even a successful ballad or two (the acoustic songs-turned rockers "Gone" and "Inside Job", the latter with an amazing piano; the slightly psychedelic, aching, "Black"-like "Come Back"). Some Pearl Jam fans don't like this at all, but I think it's them reaffirming their status as a good band.

4) Will they ever stop?   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Pearl Jam have been my favorite band for a long time. I fell in love with their sound, structure, and content from the first time I heard "Ten." I see reviews, and hear prople coment, all the time, on how Perl Jam was never as good as their first album. Now, I will admit, the first one is still my favorite, but I also believe that as the guys have aged, they have matured. It shows in their songwriting and in their playing. They are studio tight, but they still sound as raw as ever. This CD is no different. Right out of the gate, it ROCKS! wile there are a couple of Ed's signature ballads on here, this album is as full-throttle as the boys have been since "Vs" came out. It's loud, fast, and full of Pearl Jam energy. This is an easy review, but I love the CD so much, I had to write something about it. Basically, If you're a PJ fan, you know exactly what this one will sound like before you even listen to it. You know what to expect, and they do not dissapoint. If you're a nay-sayer, who thinks PJ lost it after 1991, then listening to this CD will change your mind, as much as not listening to it will do nothing to change your stuborn mind. Just buy the damn thing and listen to it. You know you like good hard rock n roll, or you wouldn't have clicked on the CD anyway!

5) Life Wasted   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is an amazing record. Pearl jam has done it yet again. This album isnt as good as VS. or Vitalogy but it is definitely better than anything else out there right now. Proving once again that Pearl Jam is and will always be the best band ever.
