A hit single can be a bit of a mixed blessing for new bands, especially if said song gets you firmly lumped into the "novelty band" category. Such was the case with Weezer, whose runaway hit "Buddy Holly" touched a global nerve upon its release, then got on everyone's nerves after months of radio saturation. However, it did ensure that they sold millions of copies of their self-titled debut. Which is why it's so strange that their second album, Pinkerton, was ignored. Perhaps the cold shoulder was due to the willfully noncommercial first single, "El Scorcho," which crashed and burned. Whatever the reason, Pinkerton soon disappeared, which is a shame because it's a great album. Whereas Weezer reveled in the band's geek-rock image, Pinkerton saw Rivers Cuomo maturing as a lyricist. From the opening, "Tired of Sex," which rants about the frustrating easiness of groupies, to the new wave pop of "Getchoo" to the epic genius of "The Good Life," there's much more diversity here than the Pixies-influenced bouncy grunge of their debut. With the closing solo, the acoustic lament "Butterfly," Cuomo demonstrates a pop mastery that promises great things from this reformed geek. --Robert Burrow

Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5
1) excellent [Rating: 5 out of 5]
i consider myself a huge weezer fan, which means that i absolutely despised their last 2 efforts, and only half-despised the green album. pinkerton might be their best effort, then again, its hard to put it too far ahead of the blue album. it is not quite a concept album, but the title, and at least the song "butterfly" refer to the opera "madame butterfly", as a sort of metaphor for rivers' relationship at the time. the thought and effort put into this album by rivers and the band is immeasurable. this is one of my top 5 favorite albums, and i never get tired of it.2) Different, but still great [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This album is, in my opinion, Weezer's best album. It is certainly different from anything else they've done. Some Weezer fans might dissapointed by this album, but I can't see why. It might be slightly edgier, but it's still great. If you like Weezer, I highly suggest this album... Even if you don't like them, I still highly suggest this album.3) Weezer's Best [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Well Pinkerton wasn't a hit album. It didn't have any top singles but what it does have is some catchy songs with heart. Weezer's follow-up to the Blue album is every bit as good if not better than the former and just to think if i hadn't got it out of the bargain bin in a cd club i used to be in i wouldn't have ever heard this masterpiece of an album. I think the $0.99 was well spent as it turned me onto a band that i had written off as crap. Not to say the blue album was bad (especially listening to it now, it is filled with gems as well) but at that point in time i wasn't into anything really poppy sounding. Weezer were the offspring of what happens when grunge meets catchy pop rock and the blue album really showcases this. Pinkerton on the other hand embraces the catchy pop sound that has now became Weezer's staple and it does it better than any of their later albums. Pinkerton is a must own if you even remotely like the band.4) funkier style that the Blue but good, quite good [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Some, including Rivers himself, were disappointed with this cd at first. However, looking back it is probably the most well received album second only to the Blue one. Songs like Pink Triangle and especially El Scorcho and The Good Life are incredible to listen to. The cd is mostly filled with excellent songs and I attribute the stylistic discrepancies from Blue to be the source of the initial disappointment. Not to worry people, most people really really like this cd and would argue it is even better than recent Weezer cds like Make Believe. El Scorcho alone is worth the price of buying the cd.5) liked it from the start [Rating: 5 out of 5]
it's pretty crazy to read what people have to say. from the 1 star reviews to the 5 star.i've heard it all before. people complain about the lyrics, the production, the crafting, and then others praise it.as for ME, my first run in with pinkerton was an ad on tv with the cover artwork animated with snow, with the end of El Scorcho being played.the day it came out, (it must have been right after school), I went into Best Buy and bought it, left, and put it on in my car. and LOVED it. and it was played by me in my car, while i slept with headphones, and just in my room, nearly everyday for 2 years, and several times a week for 2 or 3 more years. i can't imagine an album I'd ever be more familiar of fond of. i don't know why people never like pinkerton, or why it took some so long to like it, or some of the reasoning.but to me, it's only one of THE top 3 albums in my lifetime.
