When an indie-rock band as intimately and fiercely loved as Death Cab for Cutie makes the inevitable major-label jump, it often telegraphs a painful death. Witness Husker Du, the Replacements, Nirvana--hell, even R.E.M. After a successful four-album run on tiny Seattle imprint Barsuk, however, Death Cab for Cutie just might buck the trend on its Atlantic premiere. Yes, you can grumble about the production (a little too slick), the proportion of ballads (a little too many) and the overall feeling of restraint (a little too much), but ultimately the album delivers everything the group does best in emotional, experimental songs such as "What Sarah Said" and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," which both blend stark lyrical details with acoustic guitars and soft-focus electronics. In "Soul Meets Body," meanwhile, songwriter Ben Gibbard has come up with the kind of blissful, beatific pop song that's capable of disarming even the harshest skeptic. "A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere," he sings. --Aidin VaziriCatching up with Death Cab for CutieSomething About AirplanesWe Have the Facts and We're Voting YesForbidden Love [EP]The Photo AlbumYou Can Play These Songs with ChordsTransatlanticism

1) Love It!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
For those who like Postal Service, you will like this CD. Probably becuase it is the same singer. Still, you will like either way. The jewel for me on this CD is "Into The Dark". The opening lyric is "Love of my/Someday you will die..." Sounds kind of dark and sad but it is truly a beautiful song. Makes me cry just listening to it. My husband sung this to me on our wedding day. It was perfect!

2) A great album that endures   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
My kids bought this for me as a Christmas present. Not exactly my kind of music, I thought at the time, but I have really come to love this album. It is a real masterpiece. The music and lyrics are smart, sarcastic and expertly crafted. In the end, you are a little better off for undergoing this thought experiment. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. And I have been listening to it for two years, so far.

3) Melancholic beauty...   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
For the most part this is a really great album - with "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" alone being worth the price of the whole CD. It has to be one of the saddest, most beautiful songs I've heard in many many years. Such feeling, and great melodies in so many of the songs. I love Death Cab, and I've listened this over and over and over... you will too.

4) One of my favorite albums   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I am a fairly new fan of this band, but I love this album! The lyrics to some of the songs on this album are just spot on. Case in point, "What Sarah Said", is an upbeat moving song about dealing with death. Yes, it sounds miserable, but having lost someone close to me recently, this song felt true to the heart. "Summer Skin" is like the indy version of the cult summer classic "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley. The beauty of the music on this album is that the words expressed and the music behind it seems very true, not contrived, like you find in so many albums these days. This album is very different from the witty lyricism displayed in the "Transatlanticism" album; however, there are still traces of this on the song "Crooked Teeth." I highly recommend this album for anyone who is wondering where quality music went in today's generic musical climate.

5) Great CD for a nice car-ride home in traffic...   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I love that Amazon has this "Listen to samples" of the cd's now so you know what you're getting. I first heard about Death Cab for Cutie as an "O.C." fan. They are a great band and this is an awesome cd...there's little bit of everything...softer ballads, upbeat songs like Where Soul Meets Body. It really is a GREAT Cd...if you don't believe me listen to Amazon's samples!!! :)
