An acclaimed debut prompts one of two kinds of follow-ups: either the band strives to broaden their palate or they attempt to deepen the colors they splashed all over that heralded first effort. The Strokes' second outing falls in the latter camp. In the tradition of the Ramones' Leave Home and Oasis' (What's the Story) Morning Glory, the Strokes largely stay the course with their second full-length release, producing an album that won't cause the stir that its predecessor did, but has a sneaky appeal all its own. Thanks to the quintet's Lower East Side roots, Velvet Underground and Television references abound with these guys, but Boston new wavers the Cars, and in particular their hit-heavy second album, 1979's Candy-O, provide a more suitable point of reference for Room on Fire. As with Ric Ocasek and company, Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas and his cohorts have a Cars-like knack for sly riffs that creep deeper into ones consciousness with each listen. Not much longer than a half hour from start to finish, this 11-song is modest in intent and execution, and succeeds quite nicely on its own terms. --Steven Stolder

1) The Strokes [Rating: 4 out of 5]
This a great album. I really enjoyed it. I think it is the better of the three albums.2) really nice [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I actually bought Is this it, then the 3rd strokes album years later, and then Room on fire. I had heard mixed reviews. What with the first album being a veritable greatest hits quality offering, the sophomore effort needed to be a slump? No way. This CD can be put on - just let it go; Song after good song; better and better guitar work and a bit more depth and richer production than the first album. Just a more naturally produced effort, less "stylized." Not just transistor and rythm- if you like the Strokes or any garage style rock- Why don't you already own this?3) Pull The Vocals Out of the Mix [Rating: 2 out of 5]
This is a new review of an old record. I like the songs, good hooks, catchy, etc. I just have trouble listening to it because they decided the singer's voice was so crappy that they buried it with distortion into the buzzy guitar mix. Personally, I don't think the guy's voice is so bad, so I don't get why the producers and mixing engineers ruined a good record. Too bad you can't buy the multitrack raw cuts and make your own mix. Yeah, I know some people claim that this is a Strokes sound thing, but in my opinion it is just crappy production.4) Great. [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I love this cd. My friend told me to buy it and I am so thankful she did. Every single song on this cd is catchy and unique. They have quite an 80s sound to them. I love this because it's different from what's on the radio.5) My Favorite Album of all times [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This album is a masterpiece!!! Why did it receive mixed reviews? This album was better than their acclaimed debut album IS THIS IT. Songs on here include 12:51,Reptilia, I Cant Win, wow too many great songs to list. The Strokes are truly the best rock band of our times, but it looks like America would much rather be listening to emo nonsense like Fall Out Boy, a band called "My Chemical Romance", Panic! At The Disco, and Death Cab For Cutie. Wow, why? The Strokes=The Saviors of Modern Rock. Turn up your speakers and listen to this album at full blast, even better go out and buy this album.
