1) Cut to the heart   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I first discovered Derek Webb through his 2006 album Mockingbird when a friend sent me a link from Derek's website stating that the album was available for free download. I was impacted by the lyrics on this album and thought I would venture further into his catalogue upon the recommendation of a friend. I was not prepared to be cut to the heart as deeply as I am by this album. Derek's commentary on the church and his personal faith are poetic and impactful. His lyrics have made their way into both my worship and prayers. Buy this album if you are looking for some honest and raw thoughts on a church whose tendency is to turn away from her first love and the Lord's gracious response.

2) Amazing...   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Derek Webb hits home with this album. The former Cademon's Call lead singer/guitarist has put out an album that really is a wake-up call to the church. Webb's album has none of the fluffy doctrine and crap that you sometimes hear on k-love. His amazing voice, great lyrics, and amazingly catchy tunes, this cd is worth every cent.

3) The Best of Webb's First Three Albums   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is the best of the three "normal" albums Webb has created (not counting the little House album). It is devotional, worshipful, thoughtful, and poetically creative. It's a good buy if someone likes a folks/blues/pop fusion, with a little Bob Dylan flavor to it. I've heard this album got into some hot water for its repeated use of the word "whore" in one of the songs, but I can testify that it's use of that word is consistent with the Old Testament sources from which it came (such as Ezekiel and Jeremiah). In contrast, his second album (I See Things Upside Down) isn't as worshipful or musically creative; and the pacifistic political opinions expressed in his third album (Mockingbird) distract from the contents of an otherwise good album.

4) The first and best!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is Derek Webb's first solo album and by far, it is his best album. Whereas "I See Things Upside Down" sounds a bit odd and "Mockingbird" has its moments, this is the album that is the must buy. Derek blends perfectly a combination of folk, rock, country, and a little dash of bluegrass with some of the strongest Christian lyrics of any artist to date. Reminds me of Bob Dylan in a lot of the song structures (especially "Lover"). And although I thought he would be missed in Caedmon's Call, I think both are better for it. Caedmon's is still doing well and seem more cohesive as a band (it used to be the "Derek" songs and the "Cliff" songs, but now they're are just "Caedmon's Call" songs) and Derek is able to fully express himself on a full album without six other individuals interrupting his creativity. Highlights include: She Shall and Must Go Free, Take To The World, Lover, Wedding Dress, Awake My Soul, and The Church. Another strong point on this album is his wife's background vocals (Sandra McCracken) as they blend so well together on this type of music. This album is a concept album that is directed at the church, addressing its current strong points and the ways that we as a whole could improve. It also shows how much love Christ had for us, that despite our sins and faults (like a cheating bride), God still sees us as pure and white. This is Derek Webb's masterpiece, where both his music and lyrics shine the most, and I am not sure he will able match it. This is Christian music at its best. Pay $10 and get it now!

5) Refreshingly Different Christian Music   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
For a long time, I had given up on ever finding any Christian music I could really enjoy. Despite being a Christian myself, I thought the genre mostly comprised of repetitive, non-imaginative lyrics and cheesy music. However, when I was introduced to Derek Webb through this particular album, I was immediately thrilled by the thought-provoking lyrics and great music. The message he conveys to the church through this album (and the rest of his albums to date) is one that needs to be heard. His eye-opening and sometimes shocking lyrics are just what I was looking for, and more.
