Editorial Reviews (supplied by Amazon.com):
1) Amazon.com essential recording
An introductory drum roll drops out and is replaced by a single suspended electric guitar, which is then paralleled by a snare, filled in with the bass, and--crash!--"Cherub Rock," the opening track, is enveloped in an explosion of metal guitar. So the journey begins. This album is pre-experimentation vintage Pumpkins. Produced by Butch Vig (Garbage, Sonic Youth, Nirvana's Nevermind), Siamese Dream is first about guitars. Lots and lots of guitars. A very close second is Jimmy Chamberlain's unquestionably excellent power drumming. Throughout each song, Billy Corgan delivers angsty lyrics in his signature breathy whine. "Disarm" is a nice intermission halfway though the album. As the title of the song suggests, it throws the listener into a different mood with its full string arrangements and radiant orchestral chimes. But then it is back to the aural masochism--a pain that rarely sounds so sweet. --Beth Bessmer

Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5
1) Forget "Ten" and "Nevermind" for now..."Siamese Dream" is really the unsung hero of the early 90s! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This album is quite a tough one for me to judge. Upon my first listen, I was not that impressed as I was completely captivated in Nirvana's albums and Smashing Pumpkins other masterpiece "Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness".Little did I know this was actually a really really really shining part of the Pumpkins catalogue. This has to be one of the 90s greatest albums. It doesnt sound dated like "Ten" or other alt. rock albums. It bugs me that no one ever really acknowledges this album when referring to the 90s or the Pumpkins. It is a fantastically produced, quiet/loud, layered big album!I still count "Mellon Collie" as their best album for its sheer adventurous genre hopping sound, but this album, (for only 1 disc!!) is early 90s music at its pinnacle! The Best songs here are:Cherub Rock (Great opener, big rocker track, fantastic sound!)Quiet (The distorted Pumpkins sounds awesome on this other rocking track)Disarm (One of my all time favourites..absolutely incredible sounding song)Today (Classic)Soma (I loved the layered sound, also the gradual peak from quiet to loud to quiet...awesome)Mayonaise (I love Mayonaise so much..The live acoustic version from Earphoria is another must hear song!!)Spaceboy (Another absolute favourite..it proves The Pumpkins were from a different type of genre when compared to heavyweights Nirvana and Pearl Jam)All in all, I really recommend this album..its right up there with the all time great albums and all these 5-star reviews arent for nothing...it really is a genuine 5 star masterpiece which evolved from their 1st album "Gish" and really helped them establish their own sound. Buy this now!!! You are missing out!2) a 12-year favorite, and counting [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This has been one of my favorite albums for 12 years, and I grow tired with music quite easily. Songs like "Cherub Rock," "Today," "Disarm," "Mayonaise" and "Rocket" never get old, no matter how many years go by. Full of '90s alternative gems by a rock group whose music keeps getting worse, this is your best bet when purchasing a Smashing Pumpkins record. And, after seeing Billy Corgan play "Cherub Rock" live, I've grown even more fond of the song--and I didn't think that was possible.3) Probably their best work [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Great album, was quite different when it was released, and still sounds great. If you're going to buy one Pumpkins CD, make it this one. It's the most "Even" of the early stuff, I think.4) Classic [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Along side mellon collie this is another pumpkins classic. This album is actually flawless and every song is amazing. They really dont make albums like this anymore. This brings back so many great memories. If you havent listened to this, do yourself a favor and pick this up. You would not regret it. CLASSIC!!5) 10! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Always enjoyed the pumpkins. Mostly listened to Mellon Collie and some of the newer ones.... A few months ago (I am not making this up!), I noticed Siamese Dream on my CD shelves and popped it in. I have not stopped listening. I am serious, this album is the best, fantastic tunes, great variety. I can't get it out of my head... It's addictive.
