Would American Idol winner Carrie Underwood have landed a major-label recording contract without winning the hugely popular television contest? Probably. The big-voiced Oklahoman has the pipes, the look, the pedigree, and, most important, the emotional resonance to sustain a professional career. As an investment in her future, her label eschewed the easy path in putting out an album to take advantage of her publicity, going for a name producer, Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Faith Hill, Lonestar), to handle half the tracks. It also solicited material from the same top songwriters (Diane Warren, Brett James, Troy Verges, Rivers Rutherford) who stock albums by Hill, Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood, and Wynonna. "Jesus, Take the Wheel," the hit first single, shows off the best of Underwood's power vocals, while the sexy rocker "We're Young and Beautiful" pulls her out of her ballad-heavy comfort zone, and her autobiographical "I Ain't in Checotah Anymore" bolsters her authenticity. If the young performer oversings on occasion (the overwrought bonus track, "Inside Your Heaven"), and settles for too many generic themes, she still surprises in her ability to go head-to-head with country's reigning females. Will Underwood really survive to be a contender for the Martina throne? Let's just say that American Idol judges and voters picked the right contestant. If the posturing Bo Bice had won, rock stars would hardly be quaking in their boots. --Alanna NashMore American Idol WinnersBreakaway, Kelly ClarksonI Need an Angel, Ruben StuddardFree Yourself, Fantasia Barrino

Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5
1) Brutal...rescue me. [Rating: 1 out of 5]
My wife recently received this album as a present. She played it in the car during a long trip to Vermont in a snow storm. I must have done something very evil to be subjected to this ordeal. Ouch. Pain. Agony. I felt that my ears were keyed and battered with a Louisville Slugger. This woman manages - on every bloody song - to hit tones that even the CIA would classify as torture.Every track is the same - soft followed by loud; over-produced instrumentation; and overly compressed sound. I wouldn't waste my time commenting on this album if I thought that Ms. Underwood didn't have the talent. She obviously has plenty of talent and, as she matures, will hopefully dump her current producers and come up a more diverse and interesting product.2) Great CD! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I love this cd. I love popping it in while I am driving and singing along. Carrie has a great voice and I love all the songs on the cd.3) Great first CD! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I don't care that she didn't write it; her singing is so beautiful that you never realize it, except on "Before He Cheats". It's rather implausible, but a good, catchy tune nonetheless. Gee, I think I'm nit-picking. A great CD!4) Love It [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is a great CD. Carrie does a wonderful job. All of her songs are great especially Jesus, Take The Wheel and Before He Cheats. If you don't have this CD yet, I would recommend that you pick it up, you won't be disappointed.5) Fantastic! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Carrie is the standard bearer by which all Idols will be compared! I thought Kelly Clarkson was good; Carrie makes her sound like an amateur. I am not a country fan, but Carrie has won me over. Here you have a small town Oklahoma girl, who is beautiful, charming, and has a fantastic voice! This CD starts out strong with "Wasted", and continues that way until the very end. Every song is filled with emotion, and Carrie makes every character she plays her very own. In "Jesus Take The Wheel" she IS the distraught woman who is asking for divine intervention, and in "Before He Cheats" she IS the woman who has been betrayed. In the one and only song co-written by Underwood herself, "I Ain't In Checotah Anymore", her homesickness for her little town where 69 meets 40 is so moving that it literally brings tears to my eyes. Carrie makes me proud to be an Okie! This CD is unanimously loved by all six music lovers in our house!
