The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5

1) The Beach Boys   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Reminds me of summer, teen years, just takes me back to a time that maybe wasn't really stress free, but the memories of that time certainly are. I smile all the way through this CD.

2) What a collection!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Take a walk down memory lane! This CD has the best collection of Beach Boys hits around. I compared it with all the other releases and felt this was the best compilation. The sound was very good also. VERY ENJOYABLE!

3) Sounds Of Summer - The Very Best Of The Beach Boys   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
It took me back to happier times. Made me feel like I was back in California.

4) Fun! Fun! Fun!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This CD certainly brought me back to earlier days and truly fond memories of boyfriends past, dances long gone out of style and bikinis that now seem like full dress wear. I had a chance to get together with my college dorm mates and as we traveled by car through the Smoky Moutains we sang to this CD. Funny how we remembered the words, the hesitations and where we were when we heard "Good Vibrations" for the first time when we're now at a stage of life where memory isn't our best trait. This is what you want to listen to on a long drive or with a group of friends to sing along with you.

5) fine compilation CD from The Beach Boys   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
The Very Best of The Beach Boys: Sounds Of Summer gives us an incredible 30 (yes, 30) tracks on a single CD spanning several decades of the awesome career of The Beach Boys. This CD is perfect for the casual fan or for people who want to get to know The Beach Boys without springing for a more expensive CD or a set of CDs. People who want everything the band ever did will also want this CD in their collections. The track set begins with "California Girls." They harmonize to perfection and the guitars work well for this number. "California Girls" celebrates the joys of young love and the band never misses a beat! "I Get Around" features the band singing really well with a terrific melody boasting key and tempo changes that show they're truly pros! "Surfin' Safari" also works well as The Beach Boys happily sing of going surfing with their girlfriends just off the sandy beach--great!"Fun, Fun, Fun" showcases the joy we all feel when we're young and get our first taste of real freedom. "Fun, Fun Fun" has a great guitar arrangement; and they sing and harmonize flawlessly throughout this fine number. Love that organ, too! "Little Deuce Coupe" gives us a great tune about a young man's love for his car; and of course The Beach Boys deliver this without missing a beat! I like the percussion on "Little Deuce Coupe," too. Moreover, "Be True To Your School" really brings back fond memories of junior high school dances. "Be True To Your School" sports a great melody with an upbeat melody to celebrate school pride and a sense of community we all felt with our classmates. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" highlights The Beach Boys singing of the universal human experience of longing for true freedom when we can live with our lovers without parental interference. This fine ballad gives us the band harmonizing as well as they ever did; and the drums enhance the natural beauty of "Wouldn't It Be Nice," too. "Rock And Roll Music" picks up the tempo just a bit as the boys sings of how they want to dance with their girlfriends to some gold old fashioned rock and roll music. The backup chorus works well for "Rock And Roll Music;" and the band delivers this very well! I predict that you will enjoy "Rock And Roll Music" very, very much."Barbara Ann" uses the name of a woman to evoke an image in each man's mind of the perfect girl for him; and this tune lacks nothing--it's THAT good. The "chatter" on this number conjures up images of a typical high school dance--great! In addition, "Heroes And Villains" really rocks well as The Beach Boys bat this one straight out of the ballpark! Listen also for "Kokomo," a ballad dedicated to that perfect remote little island resort where we can all go with our lovers to have the ultimate romantic experience. "Kokomo" is a more recent hit for The Beach Boys; and this more than proves they never lost their style!"I Can Hear Music" again features great harmonizing and guitar; and the CD closes beautifully with their classic hit entitled "Good Vibrations." The various tempo and key changes on "Good Vibrations" makes this number very, very special; and the passion a man feels for his woman gets expressed clearly with a stupendous musical arrangement. I again predict that you will like "Good Vibrations" very, very much. This is classic rock at its best! The liner notes include a great essay by Anthony DeCurtis; and we get the song credits, release dates and chart top positions for each song, too. The Beach Boys will always be remembered fondly for their excellent music; and their ballads dealt with so many universal emotions and experiences that their music remains timeless. Any Beach Boy fan will want this compilation to have their collections complete; and even though we get a few songs in mono the overall quality of the CD is so high that I will give this five stars anyway.Thank you, Beach Boys!
