Editorial Reviews (supplied by Amazon.com):
1) Amazon.com
Bob Dylan has always been incredibly prolific, only releasing a fraction of what he records. Such a policy has made him a prime target for bootleggers over the years, finally prompting this sanctioned 1991 triple-disc dive into the Dylan vaults. It consists of rare tracks, unreleased outtakes, early versions of classics ("Times They Are a-Changin'," "Like a Rolling Stone," "I Shall Be Released"), and alternate versions that sometimes cut the originals ("Idiot Wind"). A measure of Dylan's depth is his list of discarded songs ("She's Your Lover Now," "Blind Willie McTell," "Series of Dreams") that would be the crown jewels of most catalogs. These 58 tracks serve as a shadow history of one of our most important artists. --Ben Edmonds

1) Essential Dylan [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This is by far the best album in my collection and every time you listen to it I feel like I could be sat in a little club in the sixties listening to Dylan on stage.A must have for any collection 5 stars!!2) A MUST for true Dylan fans! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I haven't been able to stop listening to this CD since I bought it. Many of the songs were new to me, although I've been a big fan of Bob's for many years now. You won't be disappointed with this purchase.3) excellent series of recordings [Rating: 5 out of 5]
the music here is unbelievabnle, as an older new fan of Dylan I am amazed at the extent of metarial and quality....this is worth buying for Blind Willie McTell alone.glad I have finally found what many other Dylan fans have known for years. recommended 100%4) The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3 : Rare and Unreleased, 1961-1991 [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This first collection of Bob released 'Bootleg' (material); is by far as good as any collection ever put together of Bob Dylan. Possibly the best single purchase of Bob Dylan than any old fan or new fan of Dylan; will ever find. So if you are a curiously new fan of Dylan or a long time admirer of Dylan; these 3cds will be on your play list, for years to come.Just a phenomenal amount of songs here. 58 to be exact. Each one is rich and distinctly it's own song. Each one a gem; not one cull, to be found.5) Dylan's leftovers are better than many artists' best work... [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I feel compelled to ask Dylan why are some of his unreleased tracks better than some of the songs you put out on your albums?. This set is an embarrassment of riches, 3 CD's of excellence. I know my above question may be harsh, but some of Dylan's best songs are contained on this album. Two great examples of this are the Infidels album and the Shot of Love album. The Infidels sessions are represent here by Foot of Pride, Blind Willie McTell, Tell Me, and Lord Protect My Child. Everyone of these songs is better than Sweetheart Like You and License to Kill, which were included on Infidels. Blind Willie McTell is a Dylan masterpiece, and Foot of Pride is not far behind. The songs Need a Woman and Angelina were recorded during the Shot of Love sessions, and they are vastly superior to Trouble, Watered Down Love, and Deadman, Deadman, which are the three he put on the album. Angelina is a Dylan classic, a majestic, mystic song that is one of his greatest. Even the song She's Your Lover Now from the Blonde on Blonde sessions (even though it's not complete) is better than One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later). The version of If Not for You (with George Harrison on guitar) is better than the version on New Morning. So, I wonder why Bob didn't use these. Well, it's his album, and he's the artist, and he would kick my a** in songwriting, so I must defer. In addition to this, you get many great Dylan songs. Talking New York, Rambling Gambling Willie, Only a Hobo, a great live version of Seven Days, Series of Dreams (another questionable leftover, this time from the Oh Mercy sessions), and some early editions of songs from Blood on the Tracks. The version of Idiot Wind here is especially haunting, a far cry from the blistering version on Blood and the cathartic version on Hard Rain. This was the first version of the song, but then Dylan didn't like them, so he re-recorded them with a more aggressive tone. There's a great version of When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky (with the E Street Band backing him), which makes you wonder how Empire Burlesque (the album where that song came from) would have fared if Dylan didn't use the 80's style production, which makes the album hopelessly dated. If he recorded it with a straight ahead rock band, it might have been magnificent. This is a must for any Dylan fan, period. I'm glad Bob finally released these gems instead of having to listen to s****y bootleg copies.
