Everyone grows up... even rappers. Pioneering female MC Queen Latifah shows a newfound level of maturity on The Dana Owens Album. A set of standards the rapper/actress decided to cover, the album features a host of jazz classics and R&B favorites. Latifah is at her seductive best when playing the sultry siren on Al Green's "Simply Beautiful." With a little help from Green himself, Latifah's vocals slide over the warm, organ-drenched instrumental. The result is one that works today as well as it would have several years ago. Similarly, the big band-backed "Baby Get Lost" swings with bluesy groove that is pure nostalgia. However, it's when Latifah mines more standard fare that the album seems to hita snag. Fans of James Moody's "Moody's Mood for Love" may want to skip Latifah's version, as it misses the subtle perfection of the original. Her rendition of "I Put a Spell On You" doesn't falter, but it's not impressive either. It ends up being the kind of performance that finds you constantly waiting for more but never getting it. The same can be said for her cover of the Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'." That said, with Latifah's recent critically acclaimed turn in the film Chicago, this album's timing couldn't have been better. And with help from legendary producer Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin), The Dana Owens Album is an interesting and impressive new chapter in the star's diverse career. --Rashaun HallAmazon.com ExclusiveHear an exclusive audio stream of Queen Latifah's "What Is This Thing Called Love."

Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5

1) The Dana Owens Album   [Rating: 3 out of 5]
What a beautiful singing voice Queen Latifah possesses! I am surprised at her selection of ballads, given the performance genre that initially gave her fame. She has style and clarity in her deliverance of these songs and technically is superb. I did think she could have brought more passion or more of herself in the delivery of the songs. If this is something she is going to pursue, it will require more evolution in actual delivery to convince me that she loves this art form. She was good here and I look forward to her becoming great.

2) Disappointing   [Rating: 3 out of 5]
I love Queen Latifa's voice and styling. Lush Life a track on the Dan Owens album, and is a favorite that I already had on the soundtrack to Living Out Loud. I was hoping for the whole Dana Owens Album to be more of the same, but it just didn't have the same energy and heart-wrenching soul that Lush Life had me expecting. Unfortuately, the album is basically elevator music.

3) Fair   [Rating: 2 out of 5]
First of all, I'm a big fan of "the queen"...every since her first album. I was looking forward to this CD because I knew it would exhibit a different side, but I was very disappointed. Maybe it was the song selection...not sure, but there was nothing exciting or absolutely wonderful about this CD. It was just barely ok to me. She has a nice voice, but I felt she could do even better.

4) BLOWN AWAY WITH THIS VOICE   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
The Dana Owens Album is one fabulous album that I play in my vehicle while yraveling..The Queen has really done it this time..lol..Her sultry voice singing her rendition of "Simply Beautiful accompanied by Al Green was that "simply beautiful...

5) Smooth and Steamy   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
I am a late-comer to this album, but am really glad I received it as a gift! I find that I choose the songs I am in the mood for and skip others, though....there are some really gutsy, bluesy songs and some smooth, romantic ones. I don't necessarily think they should be on the same disc. I would love to hear an all-blues CD from Latifah - she would do a great job, belting out some old blues tunes!! This is a great album overall, though, well worth the price!!
