For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and The London Boys Choir. This single disc version showcases all of Phantom's key songs (a deluxe, double-disc edition is also available), with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emmy Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs -- which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver. --Jerry McCulley

1) It's okay, but definitely not the original [Rating: 2 out of 5]
The singers aren't as good as the original stage folks, and they should not have changed the arrangements of some of the songs. Other than that, the movie achieves complete mediocrity.2) A chandelier in pieces... [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Excellent if you liked the movie and are into the "Andrew Lloyd Webber" thing.Just one advice : don't listen to it in your car.Worst if you sing to it... You may get shot by a road rage fanatic.3) Wouldn't purchase this over the original. [Rating: 2 out of 5]
When my sister requested this soundtrack, I had high hopes. After a few moments, however, we were both hunting out the original Broadway version. I haven't seen the movie, but this CD sucks.4) Not up to par with the original cast recording [Rating: 2 out of 5]
I really love The Phantom of the Opera, the stage production is breathtaking, the film is visually splendid, but the music from the movie is not up to par with earlier recordings. Emma Rossum does not have the operatic heft in her voice to properly play Christine, she sounds like a singer who has been trained more to sing pop then to sing opera, although her voice does have vibratto, its not enough. The character Christine is an opera singer, and there for would have to have a pretty well trained voice. I myself have been studying since a very young age. If the character Christine has been studying for so many years, and her father was a famous violinist, she would have to have a pretty good voice Maybe Rossum was too young when she was cast. I think they were just looking for a pretty face, and she could halfway sing the songs, so they cast her. Go figure, its Hollywood. I prefer Sarah Brightman anyday. The men who play Raoul and Erik ( the phantom) sound more like pop singers as well. I understand this is a broadway music, but it is about opera, and the singers should sound more like they are from the operatic stage then from American Idol.5) horrible [Rating: 1 out of 5]
"Vanessa" at the bottom reviewed this perfectly. It is very unfortunate that this movie brought about a new crowd of "phans" because these newbies seem to have no concept of "music". Gerard Butler CAN NOT SING. Period. I have such a disgust for ALW now after he put out this movie (and we won't even mention the "sequel" - Phantom of Manhattan). Anybody who can bear to listen to this soundtrack/watch this movie has something wrong with their ears, and for that I pity them, as they can never truly understand, appreciate, and feel what the rest of us do. I've been a phan since the late 80s. I've seen the musical 3 times. I couldn't wait for this movie to come out as I thought I would finally get to enjoy the magic of the experience of POTO from my own home whenever I wanted. There were rumors for many years about different leads of this movie. And even a petition going around for Michael Crawford to be cast as the Phantom (which I signed) which was even advertised in magazines. However, ALW still managed to screw it all up and cast someone w/ no singing experience or ability. I saw the movie the day it was released to select cities and was disgusted by Butler's growling/grunting/whatever you wanna call it, but certainly don't call it "singing". It is IMPOSSIBLE to feel sorry for him. I have never seen the show without crying, but this movie brought about no emotion in me. In fact, I laughed, numerous times, at his attempt to sing.I am currently trying to get someone to dub the original cast recording (Michael Crawford) over this movie, so that I can enjoy it. If anyone knows someone who has already done this, please let me know.
