For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and the London Boys Choir. This deluxe, double-disc version showcases all of Phantom's key songs, with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emmy Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs--which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver. --Jerry McCulley

Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5

1) It's like listening to the movie   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This CD makes me feel like the movie is on, but I'm not watching but listening to it. It contains all the songs that were in the 2004 movie. Great music. I love it!

2) Not what I expected   [Rating: 3 out of 5]
This cd contains all of the songs from the movie, but also has some dialogue, too. I wish I had known that before I ordered it. If you don't mind hearing some of the dialogue mixed in, the quality is just as good as the movie's.

3) LOOOOOVE Phantom!!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
As a die hard Michael Crawford as Phantom lover, I was reticent to accept Gerard Butler as the new face of the movie, but he won my heart as well. The score is lovely, the voices are amazing, and if you love Broadway, this cd and the movie are a must have.

4) This movie is a tear jerker!!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I love this movie due the fact that Gerard Butleer portrays a very sexy, heartbroken lover instead of a monster!!This movie is awesome!!

5) Good not Great   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
A few a years ago (I'm in high school now), my parents took me to London to see this worldly famous musical and I was very impressed. Soon after, my mother gave me the original London cast CD, with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford as the lead roles, and since then, I became a great ALW fan.The Music: Phantom is not ALW's first great musical ( and in my opinion, not his best ), but it certainly caught lots of people's hearts. There are lots of great songs in this musical, such as THINK OF ME, ANGEL OF MUSIC, MUSIC OF THE NIGHT, ALL I ASK OF YOU...,etc. The orchestrations are lovely. MASQUERADE, one of my favorites, is a cheerful theme. Grade:A plusLyrics: Charles Hart was fairly young when he wrote the lyrics for phantom, but his work is acceptable. His language is not as witty as Tim Rice is, but sounds pretty elegant. There are some slight changes in this CD. Grade: BChristine: My main complaint about this version is that Christine is sung by Emmy Rossum. I remember that in a interview, Rossum said she never heard about the musical before someone told her about the movie. How can they hire an actress that has no idea of what such an important musical is? Okay, she has a clean and pretty voice and can hit high notes, but there is NO emotion in her performance (too PLAIN). Sarah Brightman is REALLY NOT my favorite type of singer, but she definitely did a better job. Grade: B minusPhantom: Gerard Butler sings his role with good amount of emotion and has a relatively better performance than young Rossum. The problem with him is that his voice is not well trained ( a bit like the situation of Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard ), sometimes, he is just saying the lyrics, not singing. Michael Crawford is better. Grade: B plusOverall: The rest of the cast all did well, the orchestrations are fine, the music is brilliant. Grade: A minusIf you like this CD, then try the original version, you won't be disappointed. You can also try EVITA ( in my opinion ALW's very best) and Sunset Boulevard.
