Of all the downtrodden intellectuals turning skate-punk into emo, Dashboard Confessional's Christopher Carrabba is by far the most bruised. With just an acoustic guitar and some choice words, the Ben Folds sound-alike turns the concept of the love song on its head with The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most's torrent of poetic abuse aimed at girls who've taken advantage of his good nature. From "Saints and Sailors" ("This apartment is starving for an argument / Anything at all to break the silence") to "The Good Fight" ("I claimed you as my only hope and watched the floor as you retreated") to "Screaming Infidelities" ("So kiss me hard because this will be the last time I let you"), Carrabba is unapologetically bitter. Yet while his love life may be a tragic mess, the pure cathartic joy he derives from putting the ladies in question back in their place--evident from his venomous acoustic attacks--is unmistakable, infectious, and fantastically liberating. Wallowing in self-pity has seldom been so much fun. --Dan Gennoe

1) a modern day classic!   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
An amazing CD, bursting with powerful emotions, not abrasive like most emo/screamo, yet not too soft like Enya or what/who-ever...there's not much to say about this CD, unless you know nothing about emo, other than it is AMAZING! It's one of the few CDs of the last 5 years that I think will stand the test of time and that Rolling Stone will add on their "top 100 CDs of the 2001's" (or whatever this decade is called...). Of course, a lot of what's on that list will sound outdated by the time this decade is over (I can imagine CDs like LET IT ENFOLD YOU by Senses Fail and LET GO by Avril Lavigne being on there...) just like a lot of "classic" 80's music is now pretty much outdated (such as THRILLER by Michael Jackson...) or a lot of "classic" 90's music (like ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR by Marilyn Manson or even NEVERMIND by Nirvana, although Nirvana was overly worshipped when they got popular and as people's perception of music is less and less dominated by what MTV tells them to believe, it becomes more and more obvious how the record label that released NEVERMIND basically used its tools to make people believe that Nirvana invented grunge and was /is God etc. etc...; a lot has changed since 1992, which doesn't happen that often in a span of 15 years...). Ok, so maybe this CD will be dissed as being "emo" and a million other petty things, but true music listeners (people who listen to music with their ears, not their pre-conceived notions and/or eyes) will embrace this CD for years to come. It's so raw, basic, and true! What's there not to like?

I have every Dashboard album known to man, and the one that stands out the most dramaticly in my collection is "The places you have come to fear the most" Although it may be his most "underground" (not to sound like a cliche scenekid) it is deffinitly the best, his guitar soars and so do his lyrics and his singing ability is undoubtitly astounding, i definitly give it 10 out of 10.

My personal favorite dashboard cd. Every other one of their cds have maybe a few good songs that I like, but the places you have come to fear the most has pretty much a solid tack list

4) Great CD loved every song on it   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I loved every song on this CD and it is one of the few i can listen to repeatedly without getting bored. The lyrics are excellent and you can really feel the emotion in the lead singers vocals. Some find this CD depressing but i dont i think it is reflective and contemplative and sometimes a little depressing but beautifully so

You have to have this CD in your collection. Most would say this is a sappy, whiney, college kid with a guitar, but Chris did a really good job on it. I think it's true grit. It's stark. It's vulnerable. The best out of all of em.
