Although it seemed the Boss had put writing rock anthems behind him after Born in the U.S.A., his longtime fans knew if any artist could write anthems addressing September 11, 2001, and not make them sound jingoistic, it would be Bruce Springsteen. The numerous anthems on his much-anticipated first full-length album with the E Street Band in 18 years are subtler than those of the Born to Run era. But the elements are all there: the joyous rocking strains of "Countin' on a Miracle," "Mary's Place," and "Waitin' on a Sunny Day"; the dark overtones of "Further on Up the Road"; the stunning guitar solo that closes "Worlds Apart," a dramatic Arabic-tinged piece detailing star-crossed love between a Muslim and an "infidel." Although most of these songs deal with death and tragedy, they still inspire. But while the lyrics are intriguing, what's more remarkable is how well The Rising works as epic rock & roll as it draws from rockabilly, soul, doo-wop hard rock, country, and even industrial. To skewer a cliché, when The Rising is good, it's great. And even when it's not great, it's still awfully good. --Bill Holdship

1) Springsteen's best CD [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I absolutely love this CD, I've been listening to it for 5 years now, and still have tears running down my face when certain songs are on. He captured the raw emotion I felt on 9/11, and it still to this day can capture me. Now that's fantastic music.2) musically boring [Rating: 1 out of 5]
I love Bruce, have just about all of his albums. Even like some of the albums many others don't, like Tom Joad, Human Touch, Devils & Dust, etc. I'd never give any of his other albums fewer than 3 stars, and some are of course astounding 5-star classics (my fave is The Wild, the Innocent...).But I REALLY dislike The Rising, I just find it extremely boring musically. Basic hooks, repeated over and over. I'm all for lyrics, but first the music has to be interesting. There are a few good songs here, most notably Worlds Apart, but mostly they are just boring. Even the basic poppy songs on Born in the USA were much more advanced than this.3) great ! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
one of his best and that's really saying something of course. 5/5. the whole album is a highlight.4) Honestly,,,,,, [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This album is outstanding!!!!. I bought this shortly after it came out back in 2002, although I was not heavily into the "Boss" at the time but I had been a fan in the 80s. Now in '07 I am back listening to Bruce and the band and I pulled this cd out and although it dealt with the events of 9-11 back then, it still inspires hope in the hearer today. Here is a rundown of the tracks. 1.Lonesome day-a great start to this or any cd. 6/52.Into the fire-a poignant tribute to firefighter on that day. 6/53.Waitin' on a sunny day-a hopeful peppy "Glory days" type song 5/54.Nothing man-a slower "Nebraska-esque" song, subtle yet poignant 5/55.Countin' on a miracle-a good inspiring rocker 5/56.Empty sky-an excellent, slow rockin' tribute song 5/5 7.Worlds apart-a good song, a departure from the norm, different but good 3/5, not a fav but good nonetheless8.Let's be friends(skin to skin)-a bouncy romantic song, pretty good 4/59.Further On(Up the road)-great rocker, an updated "Darkness on the edge of town" type of song. excellent 5/510.The Fuse-great beginning, mid-tempo rocker, cool 5/511.Mary's Place-gospel tinged, outstanding rocker. another "Glory days" type 5/512.Your missing-sad, slow and stirring tribute to a lost loved one song 5/513.The Rising-outstanding, marvelous, ethereal, stirring title song. the best one the whole darn cd. 6/514.Paradise-another "Nebraska-esque" soul stirring song 5/515.My city ruins-sounds like something from "Greetings from Asbury Park" era, absolutely great. a slow paced gospel tinged masterpiece 6/5This might be their best effort, ever. A balanced, tribute cd that stands the test of time. Even 5 years after, this one moves the soul.5) SOMTHING TO SMILE ABOUT [Rating: 5 out of 5]
after all the sadness of 9/11, this collection will set you back on a happy note. Bruce seems to capture the feelings of that American tragedy in his haunting songs perfectly. Even if you are not a die hard Springsteen fan, try this one. Let the healing begin.
