1) Great Rock Album [Rating: 5 out of 5]
In my honest humble opinion, I find Chevelle to be one of the best modern hard rock bands out there today. I'll admit at first I was a little skeptical about them, but when I first bought their second album "Wonder What's Next" (their best album IMO) about four years ago and listened to it, I was impressed with what I've heard, and they really grew on me. Then last year, I went out and bought their latest album "Vena Sera" (another great Chevelle album BTW). Both albums kept me occupied before I found their third release "This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In)" a couple days after Christmas at a local video game store where they also sold used CDs and VHSs and DVDs as well.Now onto the album, Chevelle's "This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In)" is a great solid follow up to their second album "Wonder What's Next", and it's also harder sounding than WWN too (aside from the two softer tracks "Panic Prone" and "Bend the Bracket"). Personally "This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In)" is my favorite Chevelle album, and it has also become one of my favorite modern hard rock albums that I own lately. The musicianship on here is very strong, tight, and talented, and the lyrics are very meaningful too. There's no f you, f this, f that, I'm f'ed up garbage that you hear in Korn, Slipknot, Staind, Limp Bizkit, Insane Clown Posse, etc. Pete Loeffler is a very talented vocalist who sings his lyrics in a very convincing and meaningful matter, and his guitar riffs are also catchy, driving, and crunchingly hard hitting throughout. Joe Loeffler's rumbling bass lines are solid, hearable, and very chilling sounding, and Sam Loeffler's drumming is very good as well with some nice strong rocking beats throughout. My favorite songs on here include "The Clincher" which is a great rocking opener with some great driving riffs, rumbling bass lines and strong pounding drums, "Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)", "Still Running", "Breach Birth" Tug-O-War", "Panic Prone" "Another Know It All". "Get Some" is a personal favorite of mine on here that garners up some momentum with heavier stop-start riffs and even some nice double bass chops around the 2:16 mark, and "Bend the Bracket" is a nice accoustic closer.Jeremy's song ratings:1. Bend The Bracket (5:05) - 5/5As much as I enjoy my fair share of extreme heavy music, I also like to switch it up a bit with some alternative/hard rock every now and then (and I'm NOT talking about the crappy rock that's on MTV or even VH1 for that matter), and Chevelle are definately one of those modern hard rock bands that have impressed me in a big time way especially in an age where most of today's modern music scene is currently dominated by stupid lifeless bubblegum pop sellouts like Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Paris Hilton, Hillary Duff, Avril Lavigne, and crappy poser punk bands like Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Simple Plan. They all make me sick to my stomach. So anyways, if you're a fan of Chevelle, modern hard rock, alternative rock/metal, or just good music in general, then by all means you must own "This Type Of Thinking (Could Do Us In)". Chevelle is one of those bands you hear on the radio one day, and you say to yourself; "huh? since when did off beat become beat?" Well technically the style of beat they play is 1/3 instead of traditional 2/4, basically meaning they play in 3rds, not 4ths.Anyways, this album is amazing! Simple Awesome, even though not EVERY track delivers as well as the Single: "Vitamin R," they come pretty darn close!I respect them 100%, and I am 110% Ready to hear more...3) Not just another Tool clone! I admit that when I first heard Chevelle on the radio I pegged them as just another Tool clone and had no desire to hear anything more from them. Then one night, a few years ago I was at a party and someone put on their Wonder What's Next cd. It instantly grabbed my attention and I asked someone who the band was. When they said it was Chevelle I was surprised and wanted to shrug it off but I couldn't ignore the impact it had on me. So I went home and sampled some more songs off the cd. There were a few I really liked right off... Forfeit, Closure and An Evening With El Diablo. I listened to those songs over and over and over for a couple months until I grew tired of them. Then I decided to give the other songs a chance. Well, I ended up liking the entire cd after giving it another chance and pretty much wore it out. So I was really looking forward to This Type... coming out. It definitely did not disappoint! I liked every song almost instantly...which is extremely rare these days. The emotion and energy that comes through along with the killer riffs and driving bass lines ... it's just powerful stuff. Combine that with the way the drums seemed to flow so well the with the emotion and melodies, you can really feel the sound on a very raw level. No doubt Pete's voice and harmonies mock Maynards vocal style... and there's definitely some Danny Carey influence in Sam's drumming techniques but all in all, they really have their own unique style and sound. They're not as experimental as Tool though Pete's lyrics are often cryptic and the way their songs flow is very different. If you listen to the progression of their style and notice how they've developed and grown over the years, you'll notice some recurring patterns most of which definitely cannot be compared to Tool. You just have to give them a chance. I'd have to say Tool is definitely in my top 3 as far as favorite bands, but I'm not ashamed to say that Chevelle is right up there in my top 5.4) Great CD [Rating: 5 out of 5]
A lot of people compare this CD to others that Chevelle has done. I am just going to review it by itself. I have never really heard their first CD. My brother introduced me to Chevelle and I didn't think twice about it. A few months later, I decided to buy this CD and wow! It is a great CD. I love just about all the songs on it and it is one of the few CDs that I can play over and over in my car and never get sick of it. My fave song is The Red. Its not like the mainstream rock much like what MTV and VH1 plays. I hate that. They are unique and are not clones of other bands. I love the lead singer's voice too. If you want to get a good rock CD, I hghly recommend Chevelle.5) Chevelle does it again. [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Well I must say I was pretty impressed by this release. I was actually skeptical about picking this up because of some bad things I heard about it. Aside from the things said like it being generic, or tool-lite, or anything else thats negative, along those lines, I was able to put that aside and listen. I liked what I heard. Now I don't think its better than any past releases but I do think it comes close. There were actually some pretty amazing tracks. My favorites from this cd would have to be "Get Some", "Vitamin R", "Still Running", "Emotional Drought", and "Breach Birth". Heres the ratings for everything else...1. The Clincher - 9.5/102. There music, espeically this release, is full of emotion. This one has more sadness to it rather than the last which is mostly anger. Sure they aren't the best band out there but they still make good music and people should accept that and not just hate something for silly reasons. If you don't like the style then don't listen and stop complaining. You should only be able to complain if you are a fan of the genre or artist in the first place.
