1) Amazon.com
Their last album may have given them a certifiable radio hit, airtime on VH1, and a Kidz Bop tribute, but listening to the follow-up to 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News, you might get the sense that the members of Modest Mouse are flinching at the spotlight. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the group's fifth full-length release, is denser than its predecessor with tunes that seem willfully harder to penetrate. Even the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the line-up seems incidental, as Modest Mouse's off-kilter sound stays largely intact. But keep listening and it becomes obvious that the band hasn't lost any of his pop bite, especially midway through with a sweep of terrific songs like "Missed the Boat," "Education" and "Little Motel." It's hard to tell if there's another "Float On" in the bunch. In fact, the first single, "Dashboard," is one of the weakest Isaac Brock has ever penned. With Shins James Mercer adding lovely vocals to "Florida," however, it hardly matters. --Aidin Vaziri

1) Come A Long Way, Baby   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This band has come a long way. They went from making 25 second screw-around tracks a decade ago to this. Now, they are recruiting some of their own idols into their fanhood and even into their band. And with great songs like "Florida", "We've Got Everything", "Dashboard", "Fire It Up", and the 8-minute monster "Spitting Venom" here, they rule! There's no telling what nonsense this band'll do next.

2) Parting of the Sensory   [Rating: 4 out of 5]
"Parting of the Sensory" is the best Modest Mouse song since "Cowboy Dan" and arguably the best Modest Mouse song ever. That is the best reason for owning this CD. "Florida" and "Spitting Venom" are added bonuses. The rest is all just good music you could live with or without. Don't hesitate to explore Modest Mouse's backlog of albums, they're all worth your time and money.

3) We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
This CD is great! Modest Mouse throws together an ecclectic variety of styles that just sound good. While some songs may seem hard and upbeat, others seem soft and upbeat. Number 6- Missed the Boat is my favorite song on the album and relates to me the most. Plus it makes me feel like I could not care about anything else and slip into oblivion. The album is great from start to finish (easy to listen all the way through) and is great for road trips with friends who share similar tastes.!!!!!

4) Great Listen the ENTIRE way through   [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Modest Mouse is the type of band that makes true albums, and not just a showcase for a couple songs and storage space for fillers. We Were Dead is no exception as this album is enjoyable start to finish. Great energy, great momentum created throughout the album... and the final trio of songs is outstanding. Being a fan of the Shins, the guest vocals were a nice touch. The album has two so-so songs... as you can imagine, "Dashboard" and "Fire it Up". I will generally skip over these songs when i listen to the album. Everything else though is very good.... with a little bit cleaner production than previous MM albums. How does this stack up to other MM albums? Lonesome crowded west is my unequivocal favorite.. followed by Moon and Antarctica. This probably ranks the same (or maybe a little lower) as Building Nothing...Much better than Good News....which I do not even listen to at all.But ranking MM albums is difficult. They are all masterpieces in their own way (Save Good News...)keep it up.

5) Weakest Album Yet   [Rating: 3 out of 5]
While there are some redeemable aspects of this album, I believe it is their weakest one yet. I love the song dashboard, but after that I can't name any one track I really like. It is interesting that the vocals are more melodic, but I miss the percussive, hard hitting style that was used in earlier Modest Mouse. It doesn't seem like the same emotion and meaning is put into the music that was there before. Less angry outbursts, and clever one-liners. There are still sings of that classic Modest Mouse style so I haven't completely lost hope that they have more to offer in the future.
