1) Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Jill Scott's debut, Who Is Jill Scott?, is a luscious portrait of the artist as a grown woman. In R&B, black femininity has often been reduced to two dimensions: sex and materialism. But Scott lives in 3-D, and it shows in her voluptuous songwriting. She combines a beautiful voice with an extreme generosity of spirit, making her music a dreamy, soulful delight. Jill Scott is the singer-songwriter who wrote the unforgettable hook on the Roots' "You Got Me." Jill Scott is a better singer than the garble-mouthed Erykah Badu, who mangled those lines (albeit prettily) on the Roots' single. If Scott had sung them (which she does, and marvelously so, on the group's live album, The Roots Come Alive), we would have known what the hell the words were. Thankfully, Jill Scott has put out her own album, which exceeds all hook-derived expectations. She is, in fact, a wonder--a magically soulful tunesmith who writes tunes like "The Way" and "Watching Me" that feel as comfortable, warm, and sexy as Al Green on a cold day. And then she rips into the songs' haunting melodies with a gorgeous honey-crisp alto that'll leave you wanting more. --Sylvia W. Chan

1) Jill Scott [Rating: 4 out of 5]
Jill Scott gives the word Diva true meaning. I admire and appreciate her awesome vocal skills.....what a talent.2) Words and Sounds to Move You!!!! [Rating: 5 out of 5]
If you are just getting into Jill Scott you have to start at the beginning. This is where Jill lays down her poetic lyrics that are so deep, I swear you will look at the world differently. This is an album that will get you laughing, smiling and more importantly thinking. A timeless and amazing talent, the best tracks on this album, for me, that display Jill's fantastic use of words to create vivid imagery are "A Long Walk", "Love Rain" "Is It The Way". If you have to buy only one Jill Scott album you have to BUY THIS ONE!!!!!3) Wonderful the second time around [Rating: 5 out of 5]
I lost the first disc and asked for it again for Christmas! This cd is one you must have!4) In The Beginning... [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Even after it's release 7 years ago, the music and lyrics on this CD are as fresh and contemporary as anything being produced today, A must for any Jill Scott fan!!5) Next generation soul [Rating: 5 out of 5]
Whenever an artist breaks through the current boundaries of a genre, we have a chance to remember that we count on them to do that even more than we count on them to show us why a genre works or matters. Then occasionally somebody shows up who can do both. In this set of tracks, on any track she wants, at any moment she wants, Jill Scott simply sails effortlessly back and forth, in and out of, the currents of soul, jazz, and spoken word in a sleek vessel made of rhythm and blues, ultimately showing up as an amazingly nuanced torch singer who will make you stop what you're doing and pay attention until she's finished. In Jill's cuts, she shows us what soul is for, what jazz is for, what spoken word is for -- when to use them, how they matter -- when you need to get your inner beats out. Then you wind up saying to her, "yeah, do that again..."
