2014 Summer Reading List (That is Actually Good)
I hate getting the reading list from Barnes and Nobles because it’s terrible. As someone who lounges poolside on the reg and travels sporadically, I need a list of really good books to keep me entertained (and to keep strangers from talking to me). I love books that I can read for 30 min to an hour and put down without losing all the story lines in between. If you are the same kind of reader, you’ll love these books I am about to recommend. Please note that all the books listed are between 30-85% cheaper than Barnes and Nobles when you use BIGWORDS to find them.
NPR voted WILD: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail as best book of the year and they were right. This book is written by a young women who hikes the Pacific Crest Trail all by herself with no experience. Sometimes you want to punch her because of her lack of being prepared but she figures it out fast. The people she meets and the things she encounters are incredible. The books makes you feel like you are really there with her the entire time. You will laugh and cry by the end of this beautifully written book. It may even inspire you to hike the PCT!
Chelsea Handler’s talk show is not funny so I was super skeptical when I picked up this book after my friend recommended it to me. By far, Uganda Be Kidding Me has been one of my favorite summer reads as each chapter is hilarious and just “messed up”. She drinks more than a frat boy and can barely work her iphone but Chelsea Handler is now my new favorite author. Chelsea, if you are reading this, I still dislike your talk show but giirrrrlll I am booking a sarafi with Rex summer of 2015 because of you.
Sedaris’ humor is typically autobiographical and self-deprecating… just the kind we like! Any book he puts out is generally pretty good for reading by the pool. Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls is one of his best sattirical works and who doesn’t love ridiculing others stupidity!?
George R. R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones 5-Book Boxed Set (Song of Ice and Fire series): A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons
Ok, this may not be a series you can put down easily, but where else can you find the complete Game of Thrones series for $25 bucks? That is 5,216 pages of pure white walker action! Why wait for HBO to air seasons when you can get some closure. With Season 3 ending soon, I have a feeling we are all going to be left with “WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!???” emotions.
