How To Become A Morning Person And Not Feel Like Garbage All Day

Science shows that early risers are happier, healthier and more productive than night owls. So, if you’re trying to figure out how to find more hours in the day, setting an alarm for daybreak might be the answer.

Transitioning from being a night owl to getting up at the crack of dawn isn’t easy, but we have a few tips for how you can pull it off without being useless and feeling cruddy all day.

Exercise in the morning.

Studies show that even 15 minutes of exercise first thing in the morning can improve productivity all day. Dragging yourself to the gym as soon as you get up improves mental sharpness, reduces stress and gives you a boost of energy that lasts all day. So, even though you might feel groggy when you arrive, it’ll be worth it to show up – and you’ll feel great for the rest of the day.

Don’t skip breakfast.

Rushing out the door means that skipping breakfast probably happens more often than not. But skipping breakfast is a rookie mistake – an early meal boosts your metabolism and puts you on the right path for the day.

Get to sleep earlier.

One of the biggest complaints among night owls is that they simply can’t fall asleep early because their brains “turn on” at night. While this might be true, there are a few ways you can help yourself to relax earlier in the evening. Avoid screens an hour before you plan to go to sleep. Additionally, meditation is proven to quiet the mind and improve sleep, so if you haven’t introduced a practice into your night time routine, now is a great time to start. Finally, avoid caffeine for the eight hours prior to your scheduled bedtime.

Make the morning enjoyable.

Sure, you might hate the idea of hitting the gym before the sun comes up, but there are plenty of ways to give yourself an energy boost to jumpstart your morning. If you give yourself something to look forward to – like 8 am whipped cream covered coffee with a friend, walking your dog or a delicious breakfast – getting up early won’t seem quite so torturous.

Shower in the morning.

Really really don’t want to look and feel like a garbage person all day? Then shower when you get up. It’ll not only wake you up, but help you to feel more put-together and productive during the day.

Schedule things first-thing, even if you don’t want to.

Nothing will turn you into a morning person faster than early appointments you can’t miss. Whether it’s a meeting with your advisor or a class where the professor takes attendance, schedule things that will force you out of bed and being the best version of yourself from the get-go.
